Default Will PostgreSQL 9 improve performance for my so-so laptop

I looked through the Performance Tips sticky, but I'm not sure if this would apply to me as my laptop isn't a high-end machine: Win 8.1, x64, Intel i3-3120, 6 GB, 2.5 Ghz, 7200 HDD.

I have the default PostgreSQL 8.4 installed. Would upgrading to postgres 9 have a meaning impact on a laptop like this? If so, should I just get the latest version, 9.4? Thanks.

The difference won't be significant. Improving your hardware, like adding an SSD or ram/upgrade CPU will see much bigger improvements.

If you do upgrade, 9.4 should be the better option as far as Postgres versions. I've been using it some and it's been solid. 9.1 was awful. The other versions have been good. 9.2 has been the most tested version of the later versions.

Thanks a lot, udbrky! Yeah the next laptop I get will have an SSD; my main desktop does, and I noticed the difference right away.

One related question: Is there a difference between doing a full vacuum using HM2's Database Manager screen vs. doing it manually through pgAdmin (as described here: http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questio...ze+Database+)? Not sure if one is more thorough than the other of if they are just the same thing. Thanks.

No difference. The HM2 and NC vacuum options just invoke the PSQL process.

Actually, one last related thing. I asked this in the NC subforum here, but sreticentv didn't know:

Is there a difference between vacuuming via NoteCaddy > Tools > Vacuum and doing it through the Database window in HM2? I usually run the "Full - Vacuum" option that way every week or so. Does that do the same thing at the NC version? Thanks.

If he doesn't know I wouldn't know. I don't know which of the PSQL processes he invokes. I do it from NC occasionally as well as the HM2 Database Manager > Full but I don't have a huge DB or generally use NC so I never cared much to pay attention to if one was more efficient or try a comparison on 2 different machines with the same database vacuuming one with NC HM2 and the other with HM2.

Ok, well thankfully neither takes that long for me (even with a 1 mil hand db), so I'll stick to doing them both on occasion unless someone tells me otherwise. Thanks, Fozz.
