    Default HEM2 Download Problems

I have major problems with my postgresql/Widows/OS-

When I run the setup wizard in HEM I get the error message: There was an error starting the service pgsql-8.3. Please manually investigate the problem.

When following the FAQ's is says to first update windows. When I try to update windows I get the error message: Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer. I looked the error message up and found some apparent "fixes" for this problem; none of them worked for me.

I talked to dell support and after unsuccessfully working with me to get my windows updates going, they told me I need to re-install my operating software... problem is I don't have the OS disk or have my OS backed up on my computer.

    1. Are there any other fixes anyone can recommend to either get postgresql working or my windows updates working?

    2. If not, is there anyway to reset my 30 day free trial seeing that I can't access the software? I'd like to try it out once I get a new computer on black friday.

Will windows not update because Microsoft thinks you don't have a valid licence for the OS?

Your PC is suffering from a few small OS s/ware related problems & it would be wise to start from a clean slate! If you do get HM2/PostgreSQL working on your current system, but it has problems... you'll have a devil of a job diagnosing the fault

    so here's my suggestions:-

[1] Reset your PC to Factory Condition using the Dell Recovery partition on your HDD - it takes only moments
[2] If [1] isn't possible Dell will ship you replacement OEM disks for a small charge - less than $50 I think - after all the OEM OS is part of your original purchase
[3] If [2] isn't possible you can get Dell disks elsewhere [Google it], but make sure you find your OEM OS serial number so that you can validate the software
[4] Black Friday has already arrived in some cases

Regarding your 30-day ** ... since you haven't even managed to install you will only need to email HM2 sales when you're ready to start your trial - on a healthy PC
** This is just my opinion - you need to email sales@holdemmanager.com for official confirmation [include a link to this thread]

    Thanks for the response Loki-

There is no recovery partition on this computer apparently.

All the FAQ's are predicated on an updated windows, and for whatever reason that doesn't work.

I bought the computer used from a friend I no longer talk to. Dell was willing to talk to me when I gave them his name, but they certainly didn't mention anything about supplying me with replacement disks or validation codes, even for a cost; they recommended I go to best buy or something and purchase new OS disks.

There's apparently some nasty malware or root-kit viruses on my pc messing up windows. When investigating it the the Dell rep we found Windows hasn't been updated since 2012. Although this comp works great with the software already installed, getting HEM on here might be a lost cause.

    Am I missing something perhaps?

    Thanks again for the help.

I erased my post twice by hitting Reply to Thread... I was just putting text in the box to see if I could get that Reply to Thread button to pop up again. My bad, thought I'd be able to erase that.

I would buy a new windows disc myself. Anytime I have any sort of problem or think I have a virus I do not attempt to fix the problem or clean the virus, I just reinstall Windows. Even if you could get PSQL installed HM2 will likely have all sorts of problems if your OS hasn't been updated in 2 years. This is also part of why I never have/will buy a used PC or any PC without a Windows disc/partition.

Also. I think it makes more sense to buy a PC from a specialist & not a box shop like Dell. You can specify your exact hardware & a good supplier will not load crapware onto your system - all those "free" extra programs. It costs more, but well worth it. Make sure your purchase includes full rights to the Windows OS so you can transfer the licence to a new machine - with OEM s/ware it's often tied to the h/ware which can cause problems later.....

Oh & buy an external backup drive and do

    Thanks Loki-

The only things I do on my PC are occasionally browse the internet and play poker. I was actually thinking of buying an old refurbished PC for about $100 since I'll be using it on such a limited basis... I've found newer models, quad core/8 gig memory for around $500...

Any suggestions if I were to go with a specialist? How much more am I looking at paying? Is there really that much of an upside if I'm just playing cards?

And yeah I hear you on the backup drive, will do.
