I do a lot of mid to low level graphics & video production so I spent my money on RAM, a decent graphics card & a beautiful monitor. I play only 90k-120k hands/mnth cash on PokerStars with only my own hands [no datamined nonsense for me]. I have an all-time history DB for archival purposes & an active playing database. The playing DB is always never more then 7 months of HHs. So at the end of each month I simply create a new DB & import the HH for only the previous 6 months & delete the old active DB. So my DB is never bigger than 500,000 hands & the HUD is very snappy. I don't use autorate or multipanels or note caddy. For notes I use the system in the PokerStars client rather than HM2 because my needs are simple.

All the s/ware I use doesn't benefit from multicores, but does benefit from as much memory as possible. So I do fine with a Win 7 64-bit + 8Gb + dual Intel Core i5 + HDD

If that's you or you play less than me then your $500 system is over-speced

I went with a specialist because I went into a couple of High Street "box shops" & got told obvious B.S.
These people treated me very well online & there must be an equivalent in your region:- Chillblast - UK's Most Awarded Custom Gaming PC Builder

I just bought a basic box with drivers & OS completely up-to-date & bought peripherals from the cheapest source. The refurb for $100 isn't a good deal - there's a scam somewhere... the fans will be rubbish etc - trouble waiting to happen sir

Yeah I hear you, I think the memory is the most important aspect for me... The beautiful monitor thing wouldn't hurt either. I'm thinking I should be able to find something pretty affordable considering my needs. Thanks for all the advice on the PC choice.

I'm just getting back into analyzing my hands with a database. I'm going to have a good number of questions on HEM moving forward... Does this forum support PM's? Would you mind if I shot you a question or two once I come up with said question or two?

Anyway thanks again for the insight.

I don't know if pm works here these days - it used to, but I turned it off because I got comms from all sorts of 'tards ~ the nets is full of rude, ignorant 'tards. You can find me by Googling solihull nightjarflying & looking at the grav link. My email is there & we can comm that way or I'll give you my Skype via email for a face-to-face. Be lucky!

That's cool. Avoid refurb unless you are [financially] forced - if you buy cheap I guarantee you'll pay later in disappointment - a Windows license is more than half way to $100 & without a licence the "refurb" is junk.

Hey was just hoping I'd catch you on here tonight... I found a pretty decent price (tonight) on a comp with most of the specs you were mentioning... I think the 8 gig ram is important. My friend has the same computer and he loves it... He's in IT for the defense dept.

    any thoughts:

    Good price
Dual core 64-bit but s/ware 32-bit it seems from the spec
No wireless [which would suit me]
    No TV card [which wouldn't]

I suppose there's no transferable Windows licence - it looks oem & tied to the hardware [I'm guessing]
Is there an OS disk supplied? What happens if you need to reinstall the OS next year for some reason? Is it in part of one of the ASUS components I've listed below? Will they give you £15 to not take that mouse/keyboard?

Sata 600 would be fine for my medium poker needs & I think it's good enough if you wanted to upgrade your 7200 HDD later to an SSD [or add a second SSD] but check with Crucial memory - send them an email they're very quick

No "crapware" to speak of, but I would immediately uninstall these:-

Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security Trial
    Office Trial Microsoft Pack
    Adobe Reader
    MaxxAudio

Don't know about these or what they mean:-
    ASUS AI-SUITE II
    ASUS AI Manager
    ASUS My Logo2
    ASUS Update
    ASUS Q-fan
    ASUS Vibe
    ASUS AI Charger
    ASUS WebStorage
    ASUS Music Maker

So I ended up picking up an HP: HP Pavilion 500t Desktop | HP® Official Store

They dropped the price $80 this morning... I'm kind of cheap, and seems to have everything I need for playing poker. I added a 16GB mSATA SSD Cache for $50-

Thanks again for your help. I got on your youtube channel the other day. I deleted my account which I think I'd need to PM you there. Is there another place I can find your email or should I just create a new account and get in touch with you there?

Checked out solihull too, seems like a nice place. Reminds me a little of Lake Forest Illinois where I grew up; minus about 800 years of history.
