Default How to get more disk space?

I only had 33gb left, deleted log files and got 12gb back.

I am trying to delete more stuff to get more disk space. I tryed manual vacuum with pgadmin, nothing seems to happen.

I an thinking about a new external hard disk... is a 7200 rpm external hard disk better then a 7200 rpm laptop hard disk? also, ssd is obv faster but they have less space is ssd a better option?

Edit: the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\PostgreSQL\8.3\data\base contains 49gb... can I delete something there?

Edit2: i tryed full optimaze but after 30minutes i lost 5gb space... why is that?

Actually the best thing to WIN back the most disk space is to compress the SQL data folder. Though this can decrease performance.

Any external harddisk is slow, due to the USB2.0 data transfer limits.
In theory an eSATA/Firewire external harddisk should be fast enough, but most mainboards don't have eSATA/Firewire.

Similarly, most 2.5" 7200 RPM laptop harddisks still suck, favoring SIZE and energy efficiency. (the FAST 3.5" desktop harddisks generate too much heat for notebooks)

Do you have a desktop or laptop??
SSD is best. And fastest.. and it doesn't generate any heat... and doesn't make any noise.. oh and doesn't have any moving parts. Though it's really expensive in dollar per Gigabyte.

You can't delete other files from the /data folder. Is the 49 GB only 1 database... or you have multiple databases.... some you don't use anymore??

When you run a vacuum/analyse (also reindex) it will create HUGE temporary files, which should be deleted again if you STOP the process. So if you have a 50 GB database... you actually need about 10-30 GB (depending the size of your largest INDEX) of free space to be able to finish the full process.

(if you observed HH configuration--->PURGE all your hands, it will decrease the size of the biggest index)

After i stopped vacuum and rebooted pc my free diskspace went to 90gb from 78gb. I only purged 700k hands (it took a long time but 700k is prolly nothing since i import lots a hands?) optimize i only did that for 30minutes before i shutdown i think thats ho i got the 12gb back after reboot?

    I use 1 database, and a laptop.

I do wanna buy a new laptop soon, processor at least a i5. hard drive ssd is obv faster but with this large databases it will be full real fast, is it worth it? so i think 7200 rpm 500gb 16mb cache ir prolly best price value?

Oh, and ccleaner got me 28gb back

If you have a 50 GB database, you should consider a 160 GB SSD as your harddisk.

It will simply take 20x longer on a regular harddisk to:
    -vacuum/analyse/reindex the database
    -backup/restore the database

Also importing hands will be faster on the SSD, and you don't have to defrag the SSD.

With such a large database, the risk of data corruption is really high abd maintenance requires a lot of TIME.
You should seriously splitting up the database in for example:
    CASH vs SNG hands or
    <2008 vs >2008 hands.

    I meant 2008..

Half my database is 2006-2008... while I only need part of 2009 and 2010 while I play. So I have to databases: Old (where I can view all my 2006-2008 graphs) and a New database I use when I play.

    Laptops with a SSD:

    Dell Latitude Z600 ADVANCED Business
    Sony Vaio VPC-Z13Z9E/X
    Sony Vaio VPCZ12Z9E/X
    HP Elitebook 2740P
    HP Elitebook 8440P
    Lenovo Thinkpad T400S
    Toshiba Portégé R600-13Z
    Lenovo Thinkpad T410s
    Dell Adamo XPS
    Lenovo Thinkpad X301
    Toshiba Tecra S10-102
    Toshiba Portégé R500-12P
    Samsung X360 AA02
    etc
