Depends....
If you have only some GB left freeing space will help but not when your hdd is only half full or something like that.

If you have a regular harddisk that spins with 5400 RPM / 7200 RPM, the data is written from the outside of the platter to the inside.
If the harddisk is near-empty. The reading-head hardly has to move and can stay at the edge of the platter.
If the harddisk is near-full (and has multiple platters) the reading head constantly has to move from the outside circles to the inside circles of the platters.
In addition, if the data is fragmented the reading-head has to move a lot more.
(so defrag the drive regularly)
The difference in speed between a near-empty vs a near-full drive can be huge. For example: 100 MB/s on the near-empty drive, vs only 30 MB/s on the near-full drive. (sequential read speeds)
