can't start postgres service

my postgres service doesn't start anymore.

For a while I was having to stop/start the service everytime I rebooted in order for HEM to be able to talk to it. Now the service won't start at all! If I try to connect in pgAdminIII I get : "could not connect to server: Connection refused (0x0000274D/10061) Is the server running on host "127.0.0.1" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? "

I tried restarting the service from pgAdmin III - no luck
I tried restarting the service from control panel admin - no luck
I completely turned off all firewall anti-virus - no luck

I'm running XP service pack 3

How can I recover from this? HEM is useless right now.

nevermind.. I found it in the FAQ.

deleting the postmaster.pid file worked
