On my second laptop when I start HEM the importer initialize... doesn't go away. Why would this be?

Second question: How do I turn ON daily cache? Thanks

Is it VISTA, if so please try disabling UAC and then restarting your PC

To turn daily cache on:

Open your holdemmanager.config file from C:\Program Files\RVG Software\Holdem Manager\Config folder and edit this line from False to True while HM is closed and then restart HM
