Which handhistories do you want to save on the external HDD?
- the ones written from the pokersites.
- the imported ones which HM moves to an archive for backup reasons
or do you mean the whole postgresql database with all imported hands, stats, players,....
Either just install PostgreSQL to C:/
Then read: http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questio...iveOrPartition
(and edit the registry so it will use the external harddisk instead for the /data folder)
Or download and install PostgreSQL with the 8.4.8 installer from PostgreSQL: The world's most advanced open source database straight to the external drive.

Just a general question:
Does postgresql contain the same handhistories as the archive folder does?
Not really. The PostgreSQL database consists of about 100 indexes and 500 tables.
(each contain different stats, your holecards, list of players, preflop actions, etc. etc.)
One of the indexes does contain the handhistories, but you need access to the entire database to view/export them. So you should also backup the original handhistory files from the archive folder.
