Pretty sure overheating is the reason. NC maxes out your CPU-usage when creating notes and this creates heat. If the cooling-system is full of dust, your CPU will throttle down and finally shuts down...

Didn't try all combos, but at me works for example 3x16. Pretty sure you can use every possible combo up to 32x32.
