I have the same problem.

I played a few sessions and all was well, but this last time I tried to open up HEM and got the same message.

I installed to the newest version of HEM, but it is still giving me the message and nothing happens. I hit " OK " but my HEM never loads up or anything.

Can someone please assist me?

Actually my error says: An error occured while loading the Pref files, Root element missing or something to that effect

I have service pack 3, I am also on windows XP

I tried to remove the config file, that didnt work, I got the same error...

Then I tried to remove the prefs.xml, and that also did not work.

I load up HEM....the error box appears, I hit OK, and nothing happens after, its just like it closes and I am back to square one.

I went back and tried installing an older version of HEM and still nothing, so I guess I will just have to wait to hear back from you here in the forums.

I am totally lost on what to do. It was all running perfectly earlier, so I have ZERO idea why this just occurs out of the blue.

1) Close HM and the Table Manager.
2) Delete > \Holdem Manager\Config\prefs.xml. If you want to reset your HUD panel positions also, delete: pospref.txt, and pospref2.txt, and pospref4.txt.
3) Start HM< Auto Import, Open the Table Manager, and test on a single cash table.

If that doesn't solve the problem, try resetting the config file:

0. Make sure you have installed the latest Beta version.
1. Note your database connection settings from the database management
2. Close holdemmanager
3. Go to the folder config in the holdemmanager installation path
4. Rename the file holdemmanager.config to holdemmanager.config.corrupt or sth. like that.
5. Under Vista make sure that UAC is switched off or check the administrator settings for holdemmanager.exe, hmhud.exe and dbcontrolpanel.exe under properties->compatibility
6. Restart Holdemmanager
7. Holdemmanager reinstalls and displays some messages and warnings
7a. A new holdemmanager.config file is generated
8. Reconfigure your database connection
9. After successful start reconfigure your Auto-import settings
10. Table manager should start again.

If none of that helps, I would suggest a clean reinstall:

1) Export any custom HUD configs individually, make a backup of your C:\Program Files\RVG Software\Holdem Manager\Config folder, and any other important files. If you have custom filters/reports/stats, just copy the entire \holdem manager folder before uninstalling.
2) Uninstall HM with Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall Software, Remove Programs easily (http://www.revouninstaller.com) using the Deep setting. You do not need to uninstall PostgreSQL.
3) If given the option, on the 2 following screens of Revo, remove any registry entries and leftover files.
4) Reboot your computer
5) Install the complete setup of HM: http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe. You should un-check the PostgreSQL Option when running the combo installer.
6) Test if it for a while and see if it works

Thank You for the quick response Fozzy.

What I ended up doing, was just reinstalling the HEM and that seemed to do the trick.

Is there any idea, why this error occurs?

It can be for a variety of reasons, but should be a very rare occurrence. Files and Databases most often become corrupt or damaged if your PC/Windows crashes while using those files. Power outages, surges, failing hard drive sectors, etc, can also cause these issues.

As long as you keep copies of your \Holdem Manager\Config folder and/or export your various HUD configs it should be of little consequence if it happens again. Obviously you should do database backups as well, and keep all original files in case a backup file files.

Below are my cliff notes for backing up and reinstalling.

If you’re doing a clean reinstall or moving HM to a new computer you should consider the following.

We have a backup and restore feature within Holdem Manager that makes it easy for you to backup all your settings, hand histories and files.

This is a new feature and there are some compatibility issues with it so if you have any problems you can do this manually by following the instructions below:
