Ive had HEM and Postgre working on my Windows XP SP3 fully updated desktop for a year with no probs. Last night I started getting this error message in the systems tray.

Unable to save data for the file prog files\postgre\8.2\data\base\16403\\24602
data has been lost. this error may be caused by a failure of your pc hardware or network connection. try to save it somewhere else.

The PC works fine and I have written to and used files on the same HD. Strangely I cannot see C drive when I open Auslogics disk defragger though.

I am getting the regular cannot connect messages when I try to start HEM now and I cannot start the Postgre service. There is no postmaster.pid file.

I use Comodo firewall and have done on this system since installing HEM and postgre.

Most of these probs seem to originate with Vista so Im not sure where to go from here.

Ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling postgre but no good.

Starting to think its a HD problem as I tried another defragger but that didnt recognise C drive either. Wierd that the rest of the drive works fine. Could it be a HD problem in the exact sector that HEM uses? Could I be that unlucky?

Can I backup the postgres DB without the service being started?

You can backup the database through PGadmin http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=12 but considering the issues your having with your hard drive it may just be backing up a corrupt database

It sounds very much like your having a problem with the hard drive so id get onto a PC forum and see what tests you can do to check the hard drive

Also your hands should be archived to C:\HMarchive so you could use these instead of backing up if you want

I downloaded the diagnostics tool from Western Digital and the drive passes all test with that. Everything works fine with the drive except defragging and chkdsk. They just wont work.

I have googled the error message and a lot of results suggest its a caching problem with large files. Any ideas?

I am now getting this error message when I try to open the DB as well

Guys if the database is corrupt I'll just start a new one but how do I do that when HEM and Postgre both wont start?

Regarding the transport connection error in almost all cases its a firewall/antivirus problem see this FAQ http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34

I get the feeling though that there might be an issue with something especially when somethings blocking postgreSQL for writing an also those programs cant see the C dirve.

Do you have another drive you could install PostgreSQL on, if so and presuming the above FAQ dosent work please uninstall PostgreSQL on the C: Drive, then do a clean install of postgreSQL on the other drive http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=176

OK will start from scratch on a 2nd drive. I install it without attempting to use the old database right?

Yeah uninstalling wont delete the database but the idea is that you install a new fresh version on the new drive and import your archived hands since you cant connect to the other one
