View Full Version : Best way to run HoldemManager from an external Hard Drive?

I have two laptops (no desktops) in my wireless home network and I'm looking at adding an external hard drive to store all large amounts of data on to save valuable disc space on these laptops.

I will likely be going with the Dlink DNS-323 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=509)(2-bay network storage unit). This device will connect to my network and I'll then have full wireless access as a "lettered" network drive on each laptop.

I'd like to be able to move HoldemManager AND all the large data associated with my PostgreSQL database to this external storage unit.

Will I be able to do this and have the same HM and HUD functionality as if this data was stored directly on my local "C" drive as it is now?

If this is possible, how do I set this up so speed in wirelessly accessing the contents stored externally isn't an issue?

Thanks.

These instructions were for a slightly different set up then I'm looking to do. They are for setting up HM on one computer and accessing the same HM Database from another computer on the same network.

I'm looking to store the database on an external hard drive, and not on one of the computers in my network.

Would this be the same set up and work the same?

Thanks.

I have tried this and not got it to work. (Using beta 35)

I attached a iomega Network hard drive to my network. (My holdem database was getting too big for my hard drive)
On both my windows NT and Vista machine I Installed latest Microsoft.net files.
Uninstalled virus checker, disabled windows Firwall and Defender on Vista.
Made the registray change.
Uninstalled postgres and reinstalled as outlined.
Installed latest 8.4. on both machines. tried same thing.
(Reinstalled postgres and rebooted countless times)
In every case I get Error 1053

On my Vista machine I can run 8.4.1.1 ok, and connect Holdem manager to it. But it wont allow me to use my network hard drive.

On my XP machine the postgres 8.4 service won't start at all giving error 1053 even with all default settings. I suspect this is a seperate issue that is less important as 8.3 works fine but gives the usual Error 1053 when I try to change the location of the data folder.

Any suggestions.

I would never use such a construction, accessing the same database structure from 2 different PCs with different Operating systems will sooner or later result in database corruption.

You should use a network postgresql installation or use 2 different Postgresql installations and copy the handhistories.

Both postgres instalatons are completly independant (well except for the data directoriess being in different locations the same network hard drive). I just need to get the network hard drive working with one of PCs. Then I will forget the other one.

I suspect it might be a setup problme with the hard drive (iomega Home media network hard drive). but I don't know what.

Because this is a very specific question i suggest you look for help at the experts site: www.postgresql.org. They have a forum too where you can ask questions and hopefully you get a better qualfied answer there.

Hi thanks, I did look there but could not find the support forum you mention.
