View Full Version : Can't connect to postgreSQL

Hi,
No matter what i try, i can't connect to postgresql. I went through the faq and followed the tedious steps of disabling all the firewalls, and uninstalling/reinstalling postgresql but it made no difference.

Everything worked fine on friday, i'm not sure why it doesn't work now.

Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem. Been using HEM for 3 months now and today for some reason keeps telling me I cant connect to my postgresql database.

I've already tried FAQ ID # 34 and its been no help.

Heres some info that may help in trouble shooting the problem.

- I use Vista Pro 64bit. I have UAC turned off and all the HEM exe's are set as 'run as admin'

- I use postgres 8.3

- I have the Vista firewalls disabled and I dont have anti virus turned on.

- I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling HEM.

This issue will be resolved if you follow the FAQ exactly, if you skipped a step or disabled a firewall/antivirus instead of completely uninstalling it then it wont work. It is tedious but moreso if you dont follow it exactly as youll just need to do it twice then

Unfortunately Vista seems to cause this problem when updating windows etc hopefully they get a fix out soon

I already fallowed FAQ #171, and it made no difference. I followed it exactly step by step.

Is there another procedure i should take?

I'm also using windows vista, 64-bit.

Latest version of HM and postgresql 8.3

Seems like me and you have the exact same problem. PM me if you get your HEM working

I've just tried FAQ 171 also and didnt solve anything.
I've also tried the 1.08 beta and nothing.

Ok, I thought I'd better give you my exact problem in case it is slightly different.

I am using HEM 1.07.01.
Postgres 8.3 (which I have just uninstalled and reinstalled)

When I try to open HEM I get the message

"The following error occurred when trying to open the database: Failed to establish a connection to 127.0.0.1"

I then get the message "Holdem Manager has detected you are running VISTA. Please turn off UAC"

UAC is definitely turned off already.

I went to control panel admin/services.

Postgres 8.3 is STARTED - and remains that way. I tried stopping/starting/restarting. It stays as STARTED but the problem remains.

Hope this helps.

Based on some advice on 2+2, I tried the following. No success. Same problem.

To fix my earlier botched installation, this is what I did.

Uninstall SQL, and delete all traces of: C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL.

Then:

From the Start menu select Run. Type COMMAND to open a DOS window. Type the following:

net user postgres /delete

and hit ENTER. Then type EXIT to close the DOS window.

Now a reboot would prolly be wise, before starting the SQL install again.

I've just helped a friend with the same problem. He's on a vista 64. Seems like windows defender had an update tonight and that is causing the problem. Installing 8.2 also and creating a new username + changed the portnumber didnt work out.
We did a systemrestore to the point before the windows-defender update and its all working again. Dont forget to set your update's to manually (Notice me and let me chose what updates to install)

I've found and posted a temporary work around. For Dutchies: http://www.nederpoker.nl/forum/showthread.php?p=77792#post77792

Non-Dutch:
1.Go to your configuration screen, Automatic updates. Automatic updates: Change Settings. Checkbox: Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.
2. Go to Back-up center -> system restore.
3. Restore you PC to 09/03-2009 (so 1 before the Windows Update)

This is just a temp. solution. Seems like the FAQ about working around firewall/windows updates doesn't do the trick on this problem.

HM-Team: Feel free to adjust/edit my post if I'm wrong.

So, I think I have the same problem. It was working for me last night (3/9/09) and this morning it is not. In task manager, it says the service is running, but HEM cannot connect.

I don't think there was any update yesterday, so unless it was a secret push by Microsoft (entirely possible) I am stumped. I think I reinstalled Macafee yesterday, and I installed UB yesterday (they dropped $25 in my dormant account), but these should not do anything and the surge of problems suggests something else.

Oh, I have Vista on this laptop, not sure what the situation is on my desktop.

Again, it was working fine yesterday, today I get the unable to open connection error.

It looks like a Microsoft Defender update was pushed out last night and is causing this problem for people using the program. We're working on a solution and it is the #1 priority right now

Of course if anyone else finds a solution please post the details

Sorry guys, we are trying to figure this out. The problem is that the windows update affected postgresql. pgadmin won't work for you either - this isn't a Holdem manager specific problem so there isn't any patch I can make to the program that would make things work. So, what I'm trying to do is duplicate on my pc and find a way through windows to get this working again

same problem. hopefully i didn't mess things up to far , i ended up deleting the postgres folder in my program files in attempt to re install it but the new postgres keeps asking for a password and i type in the one i had before and it says it's not the right one. hope deleting that folder didn't loose my database , i uninstalled postgres too but didn't seem to unistall because when i try to load hem i get the same error as everyone else and it brings up postgres connect screen. hope this gets figured out soon. for some weird reason it works fine on my laptop , i might have to hook up one of my monitors and play on there today.

I'm all patched up and have Defender running and still working fine and based on the number of people with issues I am guessing there are at least one or two other factors needed to make this be an issue (I'd expect many hundreds of posts by now if it was all Vista people running Defender).

Does anyone with the problem have postgresql 8.3? That is the version I am using and the version th1986 is probably running now.

hi guys:

I ve disabled the UCA, i wrote the "127.0.0.1 localhost" on hosts file, because without disabling UCA i couldnt save that on the "hosts" file, but now when i go to HM its starts like a tryal version...im afraid of puting my user and pass, because im afraid in losing my database.

What shoul i do? Should i put the user and pass?
Can i put UCA "on" again?

Ty all.

We have the fix:

Hi, Microsoft released a patch last night that has caused some issues with
the postgresql service for some people on Vista. The following steps seem to
get around this problem:

1: Go to "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc" and open the "hosts" file with
notepad

It might look something like this:
**************************************************
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

::1 localhost
************************************************** ****

2: Enter "127.0.0.1 localhost" (without the quotes) at the bottom of the
file
4: Save the file
5: Restart PostgreSQL service by clicking on Start Menu - Programs -
Postgresql - Start Service

Thanks,

Roy

Anyone having issues can you please do the following and let me know what the error is:

Try and start the postgreSQL service:
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Then scroll To PostgreSQL Database Server and make sure it’s started and if not Right click PostgreSQL Database Server and choose start

Most likely this will give an error like:
The postgreSQL Database service started then stopped, Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do...

When you get the error do the following:
Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Applications and in there for the time corresponding to the time you got the error starting the service you should see a postgreSQL error, copy and paste the details of the error into this thread

Lastly you do not need to delete all the text in that file, its fine if you do but you dont need to but make sure the following lines are in it:

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

The reason the reboot would have worked is you need to stop and start the service sometimes which rebooting would do. Im not sure why Merge doesnt work youll need to contact their support

Sounds to me like the account already exists, so why are you trying to create a new one? Just use the information from the old account and skip the step of creating a new one.

FYI, if you delete a user account from your system, even creating a new account with the exact same name and password can't restore priveleges to programs meant to run under the old account. Each user account on your system has a unique internal identifier that you can't view or modify.

Now the services just stays at 'starting'. Here's what's in event viewer:

postgres cannot access the server configuration file "C:/Program Files/PostgreSQL/8.3/data/postgresql.conf": No such file or directory

I just tried uninstalling it and then installing it again and initializing the database cluster, but at the end of the install it's hanging at the starting services part. Could I have a virus/adware or something? This is getting really f'ing annoying and I was gonna talk to a cpa today about taxes but I can't get into hem. =(

17.3.1. Server Start-up Failures
There are several common reasons the server might fail to start. Check the server's log file, or start it by hand (without redirecting standard output or standard error) and see what error messages appear. Below we explain some of the most common error messages in more detail.

LOG: could not bind IPv4 socket: Address already in use
HINT: Is another postmaster already running on port 5432? If not, wait a few seconds and retry.
FATAL: could not create TCP/IP listen socketThis usually means just what it suggests: you tried to start another server on the same port where one is already running. However, if the kernel error message is not Address already in use or some variant of that, there might be a different problem. For example, trying to start a server on a reserved port number might draw something like:

Ok I finally got it to install after constantly trying to install/uninstall a million times for the past 2 hours, but the service still won't start. I don't know what to do short of installing a new windows directory and starting fresh with everything (which I really don't want to do).
