I want to use a new external harddisk for back up of my database. Is it usefull to keep the HM Archive folder, or will that become useless with a backup?

I would recommend always keeping your archived hands just in case you ever encounter a problem when you try to restore a backup.

What is the best way to move the entire database to another partition? I've tried it via backup and restore via the HM menu, but after 1 hour of archiving (no files were created in the new folder in that hour) I cancelled. In an earlier thread I've read that it's possible to copy the 8.3 folder to another location. But how can I couple the DB to the new folder?

tyvm! Isn't this also a much quicker way to backup too (just copy the whole folder to another location?). At least you can see how much time it takes to copy. With PGadminIII you just sit and wait (and seem a lot longer)...

A full backup is much better then the data folder because the data folder can only be restored with the same postgresql version.

I'm trying to access my database on the new harddisk, because it's faster. This worked before via the link above, but that harddisk had passed away.

Got a new one, and trying to fix it again. I've copied the data folder, changed the destination via regedit, set security levels for access tot the particular folder, but it's not working. I've rebooted, but HM freezes and won't startup. When I set things back (just changing the drive letter in regedit), HM starts up as normal.

Is it that I have to tell postgresql that there is now another database (copied not moved)? Any other ideas?

You'll have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely to the new location.
(during the install it should detect the database)

If during the install, it will only give you the option to install PostgreSQL to the old location, move the old location's folder... and delete references to the old location in the system's registry.

15 minutes before, I could get access to the DB on another drive. I just remove postgresql and installed it on the external drive. That worked fine, and I can see the db in PGAdmin. But HM just wont start. Stop service/start service doesn't change anything.

I've changed the path in regedit and set security settings to access the postgresql folder. Another strange thing, my CPU is going to 100 very often now, although I only have 2 browser windows open.

Any ideas?

Which program in Task Manager is causing the 100% CPU spikes?

Try installing a different version of PostgreSQL to a different port number to the external harddisk.

Don't know which program. If I check the process tab, al are <5 CPU.
Can another version recognize this database?

I think I've found something. I can't even change the name of the postgresql folder with the database on the external harddrive, although I changed security settings according to: http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questio...e+or+Partition

COulod that be a reason for HM not to startup? What's next?

Which Operating System, Firewall, and Anti-Virus are you using?

For W7 and Vista you must set \holdem manager\dbcontrolpanel.exe, holdemmanager.exe and hmhud.exe are started as administrator. Run the windows explorer and navigate to your Holdemmanager installation directory. Right click the executables and select properties... then select "Run as admin" from the compatibility tab.

Vista, Avast, windows firewall.

The 3 programs are run as admin and UAC is turned off. But the main thing is, HM starts up with the DB and postgres on the original location, but not on the external drive. Seems to be something with security settings
