View Full Version : Failed to establish a connection to '127.0.0.1'

I have been using HEm for 3 months fine and then in the last week I have had the following error:

"The following error occurred when trying to open the database. Failed to establish a connection to '127.0.0.1'

I click OK, then the database control panel opens. I click on connect and it says:
"A connection to PostgreSQL could not be made. Would you like to have Holdem Manager attempt to start the service?"

I click on Yes and it says "Holdem Manager has started the service. Please try again."

I click OK and the Connect and it says the connection could not be made.

I have followed instructions and disabled UAC as well as reinstalled postegresql 8.3 all to no avail as well as setting the 3 exe files for HEM as administrator.

Help please.:(

This is always a problem with either the firewall/antivirus etc so please follow the FAQ here: http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34 and most likely them solutions wont work so then continue into FAQ 171 and follow it exactly as skipping any step will proabably fail so make sure not to skip anything

I have the same problem since this morning. Some things I notice:
(1) When I shut down my system last night, Vista's shutdown icon displayed that it was about to install an update.
(2) This morning, it doesn't work.
(3) It appears the postgres user no longer exists
(4) Files in \Users\postgres are still there
(5) Also everything in C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL seems to be present.
(6) Stopping/starting service with PGadmin fails
(7) No postgres processes are running at all.

ive disabled defender all together but still the same error ?

From what I've seen, the defender update has actively REMOVED the postgres user from my system, which means PostgreSQL simply won't function anymore.
Some kind of serious repair is needed -- hopefully just recreating or reactivating the postgres user, which is relatively simple and straightforward.

Wait for the HEM guys to find out exactly what has been destroyed here, unless you are a Windows and PostgreSQL expert yourself.

1: Go to "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc" and open the "hosts" file with notepad
2: Delete existing text
3: Enter "127.0.0.1 localhost"
4: Save the file
5: Restart PostgreSQL service

Replace only the last line (all other lines, starting with '#' are comment lines, so they are ignored anyway, but OK).

I just tried that and it works. Tell Windows Vista to ignore the "security threat" it's nagging about. (LOL security threat, every hosts file in the world has the line "127.0.0.1 localhost").

Anyone having issues can you please do the following and let me know what the error is:

Try and start the postgreSQL service:
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Then scroll To PostgreSQL Database Server and make sure it’s started and if not Right click PostgreSQL Database Server and choose start

Most likely this will give an error like:
The postgreSQL Database service started then stopped, Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do...

When you get the error do the following:
Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Applications and in there for the time corresponding to the time you got the error starting the service you should see a postgreSQL error, copy and paste the details of the error into this thread

Lastly you do not need to delete all the text in that file, its fine if you do but you dont need to but make sure the following lines are in it:

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

A continuación vuelvo a abrir Holdem manager y me vuelve a salir el mismo mensaje.

Attach the hosts file here, when your replying youll see a manage attachments button below the submit reply button, you can use that to attach your file. Also when you change the hosts file you should also reboot. If you reboot and the problem still exists can you try and start the postgreSQL service:
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Then scroll To PostgreSQL Database Server and make sure it’s started and if not Right click PostgreSQL Database Server and choose start

Most likely this will give an error like:
The postgreSQL Database service started then stopped, Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do...

Ok, HEM working for me again. This is what I believe was essential on my comp:

* Removing F-Secure

* Adding "127.0.0.1 localhost" to the hosts file as explained earlier

* Uninstalling Postgresql

* Reinstalling Postgresql FROM http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/postgresql.zip , NOT FROM Postgresql site (http://www.postgresql.org/download/windows)

when I tries to connect to postgres in the pgadmin 3 I got this

"Server doesn't listen
The server doesn't accept connections: the connection library reports
could not connect to server: Connection refused (0x0000274D/10061) Is the server running on host "127.0.0.1" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? "

I have just reinstalled postgre and I have changed the thing in the hostfile.

You are going to probably have to uninstall kaspersky and use something else until they sort out the issue with postgresql.

I had the same problem, this (http://forums.holdemmanager.com/showpost.php?p=115421&postcount=4) helped me.

That is part of the process I recommend.

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.

First try to reboot.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171

Please try following all of these FAQs, step by step:

1) http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177
3) http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions - http://forums.holdemmanager.com/showthread.php?t=20755

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Use our combo installer to reinstall PostgreSQL. Make sure you un-check Holdem Manager during installation. http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

If that installer fails to install PostgreSQL, please reinstall PostgreSQL using the following instructions:
A) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right-Click > Run As Administrator

net user postgres /delete
B) Reboot.
C) Try installing this version of PostgreSQL - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

Hello, I have the same error over and over again after re-installing, rebooting etc.

I've done this as well: http://forums.holdemmanager.com/manager-general/21121-windows-7-holdem-manager.html

I have windows 7 and my HM creates, when installed, another user called postgres, I think I deleted this account and now I get this error..

What should I do? I have imported my databse which took me 2 days, so I don't want to re-install again :(

Delete postmaster.pid and postmaster.opts.

Then go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Then scroll To PostgreSQL Database Server and Right click PostgreSQL Database Server and choose start (it wo'nt let you if you do not delete the files above mentioned).

Restart HEM.

Hope it helps.

Don't delete postmaster.opts!!!!
Postmaster.pid is the file you need to delete to restart the service.

Hi HoldemManager,

I located the hosts file in the drivers folder however, when I try to change the text in the file to

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

in notepad, the computer doesn't allow me to save the changes to the file, it offers for me to save the file in 'my documents'. I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem?

I am logged in as administrator so i have no idea why this isn't working, any suggestions?

Save the file to the desktop or any other folder. Rename the original file and copy the new file to the original folder.

This thread is very old. I don't want to try to apply out of date advice to fix my problem. My problem is the same as the original poster.

Hold Em Manager The following error occurred when trying to open the database: Failed to establish a connection to '127.0.0.1'

Those are the usual fixes:

1. reboot your computer and try again

2. delete the hidden file postmaster.pid in the postgresql data folder, reboot and try again.

Fabio found the following and it worked for the first person I tried it on: doing the following steps are apparently fixing the problem so many people are having:

1: Go to "C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc" and open the "hosts" file with notepad
2: Delete existing text
3: Enter "127.0.0.1 localhost"
4: Save the file
5: Restart PostgreSQL service
