Hi all,

I bought a new laptop and wanted to install HM1. I still have that license and do not really need HM2.

The system runs Windows 8 with MacAfee software. When almost done with installing I get a message saying it cannot install postgres sql. I then read the faq and saw antivirus might be blocking the install. I disabled this software and still no luck. I am reluctant to remove the software completely because I cannot reinstall easily ( it was already installed when I got the laptop.

Many thanks!

If your antivirus is the cause of the problem then it must be uninstalled. Disabling it is not sufficient to prevent the problem if it is the cause.

Many of those free Norton, Mcaffee, Comodo, Zonealarm, etc, 'internet security' bundles will not work well with holdem manager.

Please do the following steps, so we can get your computer to a state that we know will work with Holdem Manager:

1) Uninstall any 3rd party security software bundles.
2) Reboot your computer
3) Please install the latest version: http://rvgsoftware.fileburst.com/HmBetaUpdate.exe
4) Enable Windows Firewall's recommended settings through your Control Panel, turn off Windows Defender, and add firewall exceptions for HM and SQL - http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/275/Windows+Firewall+%7B47%7D+Defender+Problems
5) Install Microsoft Security Essentials for antivirus/malware protection and update it - Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/)

If you feel the need to pay for security I would suggest ESET NOD or Kaspersky.

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Use our combo installer to reinstall PostgreSQL. Make sure you un-check Holdem Manager during installation. http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

If that installer fails to install PostgreSQL, please reinstall PostgreSQL using the following instructions:

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) run the command - start > programs > accessories > command prompt > right-click > run as administrator

net user postgres /delete

4) reboot.
5) Install PostgreSQL 8.3.9 from this link - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

Note: We stopped selling HM1 licenses when HM2 was released in November of 2011. We stopped updating for critical bugs and providing support for HM1 at the end of April 2014 - http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/661/HM1+End+of+Life+(EOL)+Common+Questions

HM1 no longer works properly on a variety of sites/games/hands. If you continue to have problems there is nothing else we can do since we no longer support this software so you should consider trying HM2. If you have not tried it recently you should be able to install the latest update and activate a new 30 day trial. If you have any problems with the trial let us know and we can extend the trial for you manually.

Removed Macafee, it is a new laptop with windows 8. I do not recognize any other AV programs but i might be missing some. Defender and the firewall have been deactivated.

I notice in my program list is PostgreSQL 8.4 which is 108GB big? Is that normal? Does it mean it is already installed? I keep getting the same error:

"Sorry, could not install PostgreSQL"

Should i remove PostgreSQL and let it install with HM again?

See here last part of the error msg:

Windows Control Panel > Programs always lists it as 108GB for some reason, even if it is actually only taking 1GB. If you have it in your programs list then you need to fix the connection and not install it again.

Please see this FAQ - http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/91/Can%27t+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQ L+

If you continue to have problems:

Make sure windows is fully updated until 'No New Important Updates are Found' (this may require multiple restarts and multiple 'check for updates'), including Internet Explorer (even if you use a different web browser).

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.

2) Delete the \PostgreSQL\8.x\data folder that is left behind.

3) If you installed postgresql with HM2 delete the sub-folder(s) in c:\users\username\appdata\roaming\HoldemManager\Da tabase (XP - c:\documents and settings\username\application data\HoldemManager\Database).

4) run the command - start > programs > accessories > command prompt > right-click > run as administrator

net user postgres /delete

After you click 'Enter' for the code above also do that same for this code:

sc delete postgresql-8.4

and click 'Enter' again.

5) Restart your PC

6) Install PostgreSQL 9.0 or 9.2 from postgresql.org

7) Once installed you should disable the postgresql logging as instructed here - http://hm2faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/1121/Large+Log+Files

If there is still an issue, we need to know the error - it is in the temp folder - bitrockinstaller.txt file. If you can't see it, turn off the windows option that is hiding that directory. http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/130/How+to+See+Hidden+Files+in+Windows+

Thank you,

Do you have any news for me?

Also, some additional info. As i mentioned it is a new laptop, with windows 8. I initially just try to install HM1 without doing anything (like removing security programs etc.) and since then i have the postgres in my program list. I cannot remove it with error given above.

Please advice.

I see you use McAfee. So I guess the cause of your issue is problems with VBScript engine. Please read this article to fix it : https://support.software.dell.com/vworkspace/kb/82281
After you fix VBScript & install SQL you can install McAfee too.

Thank you for your response.

I have read that article and when i ran

- Type "regsvr32 vbscript.dll"

It worked well, it said it got completed or something.

Then i checked the registry. The inproc server is pointing to vbscript.dll. I also installed the removal kit for McAfee and ran it. I do not think i changed all that much to the vbscript...

I am still unable to uninstall postgresQL. Should i just try to install HM1 again? Or should i try to install/fix postgresQL another way?

I would suggest you try to uninstall mcaffee, reboot your system and use the instructions already given to try and fix/reinstall postgresql. Once you get HM2/PSQL working you can try to reinstall mcaffee if you must but I have never had good luck with customers that use mcaffee and generally recommend something else like microsoft security essentials, kaspersky or eset nod.

1 - Make sure you have updated your windows using the "Windows Update" feature Microsoft Windows Update (http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/thanks.aspx?ln=en&&thankspage=5)
* - Make sure windows is fully updated until 'No New Important Updates are Found' (this may require multiple restarts and multiple 'check for updates'), including Internet Explorer (even if you use a different web browser) and change your Windows Control Panel > Regional Settings Format to English (USA).
2 - Make sure Holdem Manager is updated to the latest version Downloads and Manuals - Hold'Em Manager, Omaha Manager & HM Apps (http://www.holdemmanager.com/store/downloads-manuals.php)
