View Full Version : The allin EV seems very strange.

I got it in pre with AA vs JJ. I profited $60 and it says EV diff -$23?
Does it mean I deserved to win only $37?

Am I not 81/19 against his JJ?

This is exactly right. Sounds like you had a $120 pot. Your equity in that pot was 81%. Multiply $120 by 81% and you get $97. Minus the $60 you put in the pot yourself, and you get $37. So yes, it means your EV was $23 less than what you actually won.

I have another question about all in EV (especially in the graphs tab). Suppose I am dealt KK. I have a $100 stack. Preflop I get in $90 (so I only have $10 left). My opponent has AA. The flop comes KK2. I bet my last $10 and get called by AA. I win. How does HM determine the EV in this hand? That is, does it only look at the EV at the point the last dollar went in, or does it evaluate the EV on each street? PokerEV evaluated every street (and I think this is the appropriate way to do it). But, I know some only calculate it after the final dollar is bet.

Ok, I got it. Just sounded strange to me at first. I was thinking like I won $37 but still I won $23 too much. So I should only profit $14....?

No, you should profit $37 on average. Here's how you figure out your EV for an allin hand preflop:

1. Take the total size of the pot.
2. Multiply that by your expectation (use poker stove or other software)
3. Minus from that the amount you put in.

So, in your case of AA v. JJ, you get the following equation.

EV = ($120 * .81) - $60
EV = +$37

In your actual hand, you won and profitted +$60. So, you won $23 more than you will on average. Does that make sense?

Now, can someone please help me know how HM evaluates EV for allins that occur after preflop? That is, are the EVs for each street calculated (like PokerEV does--the correct way), or does it only calculate your EV on the street when the last dollar goes in? This can make a huge difference for some calculations (see my posted example above)

Yeah its only calculated on the street when the last cent goes in, its already on the todo list to change this to the way PokerEV does

Yeah I hope this gets updated soon, it's really annoying when a big losing hand only has a +$2 EV difference after getting 90% of the money in as a 80% favourite.
