I'm deciding between 2 Dells.

Dell Studio XPS 7100 Desktop ($899)
AMD Phenom™ II X6 1075T
12GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz
1000GB4 SATA hard drive (RPM) (7200RPM)
1024 (MB) ATI HD5670 RadeonTM

or

Inspiron 580 ($779)
Intel® Core™ i5-760 processor(8MB Cache, 2.80GHz)
8GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - 2 DIMMs
1TB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache
AMD Radeon HD 5450 1GB DDR3

About the first computer, I'm concerned that the AMD processor might not be as good as the Intel.

The problem with the second computer is that Dell only will let me get a maximum 8GB of memory on it.

On an aside, I have a P4 3.00GHz, 4GB of memory and it takes me 2 hours to vacuum, 8 hours to reindex which is the partly the reason I'm getting the new computer. thanks-

How many GB is your database?
If 10+ GB, a faster computer won't really speed up the vacuum/import/reindex/backup/restore process.

A faster harddisk will.
Just upgrade your current computer with a Intel X25-M G2 Postville / OCZ Vertex 2 120 GB drive?

The size of my PostgreSql folder is 29GB.

I don't mind paying extra for the Solid State Drive but I just checked with Dell and they don't pre-install it on their systems. I'd have to buy it separately.
They have "INTEL OEM X25M 160GB SSD G2-MLC 2.5IN SATA 9.5MM" on their site for $449.

What should I do? I don't know anything about building my own computer. thanks.

Don't get any expensive upgrades from DELL since they'll charge ridiculous upgrade prices. Just get their basic system.

And install the SSD yourself.
80 GB Intel SSD is $177 online.

Or ask a geeky friend to install it for you.

Ok, I think I'll just get the Dell Inspiron.

I can buy the SSD from Bestbuy, bring the brand new computer there and they'll install it for $69 (honestly doing it myself is not an option. I watched a youtube vid about doing it yourself and I'm still clueless).

1) Does it matter whether I get 80GB or 120GB?

2) Once it's done, I assume I install HEM/PostSql on to the SSD?

3) What else should go on the SSD?

4) Any thing else I should look for? thanks again-

They charge $69?
Ask your your 14 yrs old neighbor's kid to do it for $20.
Any (nerdy) kid can do it.

Ideally you put both Windows + the SQL database on the SSD.
(if installing Windows on it is too much trouble, just only put the SQL database on it)

80 vs 120 GB is just size.
80 is sufficient for just SQL.
Consider 120 if you're also putting Windows + all your programs on it.

I put in an order yesterday for a custom-built computer at a local store since Dell wouldn't install the SSD and they pre-load Windows to the HD.

Price (includes installation) is $840. With tax it works out to about $990.

Intel i5 760
8 GB Ram
OCZ Vertex 2 SATA II 2.5 80GB SSD ($159)
640GB HD
ASUS 5450 Chipset

I think I can put Office and regular programs onto the regular HD and just put HEM/Sql and Windows 7 onto the SSD. I guess I really only need to put those 2 programs onto the SSD. thanks-
