I have the original version 8.4 which doesn't seem to have any problems however I run Secunia psi which says it's a minor hacking risk which concerns me a little. Is it necessary? And I notice there's a version 9 now, should I go for that one?

I also have a question about this same topic. I currently am running 8.3 for my HEM database and PT3 database... however I think I need to update to the most recent version of 8.3 because PT3 sucks... will this affect my HEM databases at all? Also, how do you update it and how do you tell which variant of 8.3 I have?

In general: never touch a running postgresql installation.

If you want to upgrade: make database backups before starting the installation.

Minor upgrades (for example from 8.3.x to 8.3.x+n): this should run without problems and without loss of data

Major upgrades (for example from 8.3.x to 8.4.x): there is no update procedure for this: you need to install the newer version separately on a different port or uninstall the old version before installing the new version. You will need to restore your databases from a backup.
