Dear support,

Today I bought a SSD (crucial m4 256 gb) and did a clean install of windows 7. After this, I downloaded a trial of HM2 and started importing 50k hands from my old HM1 database.

While the import speed at 125-130 hands per second is an improvement over my old hard disk, I was expecting speeds in the realm of 200-300 hands per second.

I didn't tweak any settings yet, but my system is as clean and as fast as it will ever be.

Additional system info:

i5 CPU, M 460 @ 2.53 GHz
4 GB RAM, 64-bit operating system

The import from database is really slow.

You'll get 200+ hands/sec if you run a import from folder on your old HM1's archive folder, simply reimporting all the original handhistory files into a new empty database.

On which site did you play these hands?
PokerStars/Full Tilt can be imported much faster than ipoker hands.
headsup hands can be imported much faster than full ring hands.

I was doing exactly this, although slightly different. I exported my hands from HM1 database. HM1 simply creates multiple txt files with hand histories. Then I imported them into a new empty database in HM2.

I did tweak some settings and after that HM2 was importing at around 220-250 h/s. The histories are all 6max hands from pokerstars.

Would you consider this a great speed? Or is it possible to achieve 300+ h/s as well?

With your setup (which is similar to my setup) 250 hands/s is normal. 300 hands/s should also be possible.
Which PostgreSQL version are you using?

I'd be interested to see if you get better results using PostgreSQL 9.2 (64 bit)

Some users reach 900+ h/s though. For that read: page 37, 44, 48, etc of http://forums.holdemmanager.com/manager-general/11194-top-10-hem-performance-increase-tips-48.html
The thread is an endless thread of import speeds comparisons. Page 37 has a user reporting 1100 h/s.

I am using 8.4 which came with the HM2 installation. Going to try updating to 9.2. For this I need to do a backup/restore right? But how do I configure HM2 to actually use 9.2 and not 8.4? How do I delete 8.4 after updating?

Also when I import, CPU usage is around 30-40% and only 2.5-3 gb of ram (total now 8 gb) is being used. Is this normal?

Would shared_buffers = 2048MB be recommended with 8GB ram? Or 1536MB?

Install PostgreSQL 9.2 to a different port, for example 5433.
Then when you create a new database, change the port, and it will use PostgreSQL 9.2.

Shared_buffers (how much RAM to use), read: http://forums.holdemmanager.com/hm2-releases/334902-postgres-9-2-a.html

Not noticeably better.
