View Full Version : How do I share a single HEM DB on a network computer?

I've heard this is possible, but I don't know how to do it...

I have a main poker desktop with my HEM DB all set up, etc...

I also have a laptop that I occasionally play on. I'd rather not have to set up HEM / and import my DB onto a 2nd computer (and then transfer over my HHs to keep them all in a single DB on one computer).

Both my laptop and desktop are on the same home network I set up (desktop = wire, laptop = wireless, but could also be wired...)

I've heard that it's possible to set my laptop up so that it 'draws' the stats from my desktop's HEM, and my desktop HEM imports the HHs I play on my laptop as I"m playing...

Is there a thread or documentation explaining how to do this?

FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: How do I setup Holdem Manager to share one database between two computers? (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/336/How+do+I+setup+Holdem+Manager+to+share+one+databas e+between+two+computers%3F)

Let me know if this helps.

So from what I'm seeing, it looks like the only way to do this is via a an external USB HD (or thumb drive), is that right? (which will result in slower DB speeds...)

There's no way to do it via having the HEM DB on one computer (my desktop), and somehow letting my laptop on the same network "connect" or "read" from that DB? (was just thinking that since this didn't involve an external drive, maybe the speed wouldn't suffer (??)

Think this is what your looking for FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Run PostgreSQL Over a Network (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/90/Run+PostgreSQL+Over+a+Network+)

Thanks very much -- i couldn't tell from that FAQ whether that methodology would result in the same slower DB speeds as running the DB on an external USB / zip drive...will it?

It usually is similarly slow as running the database on a external device.
But if your network connection is really fast: 150+ MB/s you shouldn't notice any real lag.

Note: if you use something crazy like a Super Talent RAIDDrive USB 3.0 memory stick to store your database externally it'll be faster than any regular internal harddisk. (and faster than most SSDs) So within 12 months (assuming your computer supports USB 3.0) putting your SQL database on a USB stick may very well be the fastest.
