This is usually a firewall or windows update issue and the following guide will help you to fix this problem.

Go to Start > Programs (or all programs) > PostgreSQL 8.x > choose Stop Service

Start > Programs (or all programs) > PostgreSQL 8.x and choose Start Service. This may take some time and a black dos window may appear while its starting. If it fails to start delete the C:\Program Files\postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.Do not delete any other files

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Windows Firewall / Defender Problems (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/275/Windows+Firewall+%7B47%7D+Defender+Problems) - Windows Firewall / Defender Problems

Please see this FAQ if you use Kaspersky

FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Using Kaspersky Internet Security 2010? (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/127/Using+Kaspersky+Internet+Security+2010%3F+)

Can you also follow this FAQ too FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Can't Connect / Failed to Start PostgreSQL (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/91/Can't+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQL+ )

If that also fails Please try this version after going to command prompt and typing net user postgre \delete PostgreSQL: Choose a Mirror (http://wwwmaster.postgresql.org/download/mirrors-ftp/binary/v8.2.17/win32/postgresql-8.2.17-1.zip)

hi there i am pretty discouraged:

I always get this erros :
sorry could not install postgres SQL no matter what i do
then if i open HEM i get unable to read data connection was forcibly closed...

I have gone through all the FAQ
I even have reinstalled windows and moved to windows 7 (new install not upgrade)
so I know there is no external software and i desactivated windows firewall (added the exceptions as well) and desactivated windows defender ( added the exception as well)

I have done all those steps : in this FAQ and the ones you mentioned

please help!!!!!!

1) http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questio...rt+PostgreSQL+
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questio...g+Old+Database
3) Hold'Em Manager - Poker Tracking and Online Analysis Software (http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=8261)

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely.

*Please update to the latest beta - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmBetaUpdate.exe

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Use our combo installer to reinstall PostgreSQL. Make sure you un-check Holdem Manager during installation. Hold'Em Manager - Poker Tracking and Online Analysis Software (http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloa...ager_Setup.exe)

If that installer fails to install PostgreSQL, please reinstall PostgreSQL using the following instructions:
A) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right-Click > Run As Administrator
PHP Code:
net user postgres /delete
B) Reboot.
C) Try installing this version of PostgreSQL - Hold'Em Manager - Poker Tracking and Online Analysis Software (http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloa...3.9-v1.0.7.exe)

Now you will have to import your \HMArchive and any other hand history archives you may have. If you play a site like stars/ftp you can email their support and ask for all your old hand histories and tourney histories/results.

-1 try install SQL 9.0.1 to a different PORT number. For example 5433
-2 try installing SQL 8.2.x (8.2 always works)
