An error occurred while loading the Prefs files : External component has thrown an exception. Using windows 7, everything was working fine til this morn, haven't changed anything in about a month. Just tried upgrading to the newest release after I had this happen and nothing changed. Any ideas?

Please delete the file config\prefs.xml
Restart HM and a new one will be generated.
You'll need to check your settings.

Just deleted it and restarted. A new one gets created but the same error pops up...

there are also a couple files: prefs.xml_1.04.13 and prefs.xml_1.05.08

The other files are just backup copies.

You should try a fresh installation of holdemmanager using revo uninstaller: FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Using Revo Uninstaller (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/126/Using+Revo+Uninstaller+)

Before doing this save the config subfolder as he contains all your settings. After the fresh installation test with the standard configuration. If it works you can try to restore your original configuration from the backup config folder and test with this.

Turn off Windows User Account Control completely and reboot...

For W7 and Vista you must set \holdem manager\dbcontrolpanel.exe, holdemmanager.exe and hmhud.exe are started as administrator. Run the windows explorer and navigate to your Holdemmanager installation directory. Right click the executables and select properties... then select "Run as admin" from the compatibility tab.

Add exceptions for those files to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent .

Run the full installer again (don't reinstall SQL) and install HoldemManager to a DIFFERENT folder
