postgreSQL: System error 1067 has occurred

I don't like to have the postgreSQL service as Startup Type 'Automatic' - I have it on 'Manual'
I just click on 'Start Server' before launching HM
I've done It this way for a year - no troubles
The reason I've done this is because of the way I've automated defrag

However today I get this error message when I click 'Start Server'

I've tried numerous reboots & changing to 'Automatic', but I get the same error message
I can't see a reference to 'error 1067' in these forums
I have found references elsewhere, but I don't understand them :)

Did you update SQL 8.4.1 to 8.4.4?
Do you get the same error if you DO start the computer with SQL startup automatically?


Can you delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it. And reboot.

I compared my two PC's & 'postgres.exe' was missing from one
Tried pasting in 'postgres.exe', but same error message

Revo deep-uninstalled HM/postgresql
net user postgres /delete
disabled Avira/ThreatFire
DL'd combo, but install failed (postgres.exe wouldn't install)

Checked ThreatFire & it had quarantined a false positive in a s/ware product called SUMo & also stolen my 'postgres.exe' :)

From there it was an easy fix
