I'm playing heads up and I'm in the big blind.
The button/small blind checks to me.
I have the option to check or raise.

If I raise, that obviously increases my VPIP.
But what happens when I check?

Is VPIP
(the number of times you call or raise) / (the total number of hands played)

or

(the number of times you call or raise) / (the number of opportunities you had to voluntarily put money in the pot)

Am i mistaking or are those formulas the same in your example? every time you play small blind, you have an option to voluntarily put money in.. and you're playing the hand. The small blind can call or raise the big blind, or he can fold. In any case, when its his turn, he has the option to put money in. (your second formula). However, if its his turn, he is playing his hand (he is allready in the pot with his small blind). You better put another player in perspective, a third one, the dealer. He has the opportunity to call the BB, but he doesnt. So then he didnt play his hand, but he did have the opportunity to vpip.. Just a thought.
