For some reason i am getting this message . Unable to read data from the transport connection . An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host . I'm running the latest version with uac off on vista and never had a problem for the last 2 years .
I've looked in my task manager and noticed postgresql is not running so i'm assuming it might have something to do with that .
I've tried all ways to get that started but unsure how to solve it . I've spent 2 hours looking through posts but am unable to find any help .
Any help appreciated

Many thanks

The same problem came up for me today. I'm not really sure exactly what I'm supposed to do but will keep working on it.

I tried a few different things that were getting me nowhere. Trying to completely reinstall the whole thing (including the combo with the postgres thing included) brought up an error message that it wouldn't work.

Did a system restore to a couple days ago and it works fine.

Was any of this issue related to the update that Table Ninja made me do? When I was having the problems I was trying to start up HEM after I had done the Table Ninja update.

After the system restore I made sure to start up HEM first thing and it came up like a champ. Sorry I'm too computer incompetent to be of more help. No idea where this problem came from but it definitely seemed related to some postgresql issue (or whatever that is). Thanks.

System restore is the answer, thanks! Worked perfectly, took two minutes.

The system restore got it to work for me yesterday but today the same problem has resurfaced. Arrgh.

When I first start it up I get this message:

The following error occurred when trying to open the database: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

Then I click OK on that pop-up and it takes me to the Connect to PostgreSQL thing and when I try clicking Connect on that I get a bigger pop-up every time with a bunch of stuff. I can't copy/paste it so this is going to be a bit of a task to type it up and I might make a couple typos in there:

Connection error: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

System.IO.IOException: Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. -->

Thanks for any assistance you can provide. I have turned off security and anti-virus stuff and tried a few other things but can't figure out why this keeps happening or what the problem is.

I will probably do another system restore just to get it to work again for now but look forward to any longer term solutions you might have. My guess is that it's something fairly simple. But I suck at computers so may have accidentally missed a really obvious step or fix in there.

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.

First try to reboot. If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afm...aspx?faqid=171 (http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171)

Please try following all of these FAQs, step by step:

1) http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afm....aspx?faqid=34 (http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34)
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afm...aspx?faqid=177 (http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177)
3) http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=8261 (http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261)

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands.

Thanks for your response. I re-started again and do not currently have the problem anymore. But I will be trying some of those steps regardless and especially so if it comes up again.

I don't accept the Windows updates automatically so I don't think it's that but perhaps one snuck in there on me that I was unaware of.

I was able to find this file you mentioned: \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid

You said not to delete it unless I couldn't get it going again. Is it okay to delete it regardless? I have no idea what it is. Just curious why I wouldn't want to delete it either way.

It's not my text but I read it as, if the reboot didn't work, then delete it as the next step.
As the reboot worked I would leave it alone ;)

I read it that way as well. I was just curious if it was okay or advantageous to delete anyway.

FWIW, I had it working again after my last system-restore already...and my latest reboot failed to screw it up again. Which isn't quite the same as a reboot actually fixing it. No biggie though. If it doesn't re-occur then that would be dandy.

And we all know what curiosity did ;)

I'm a firm believer in, if it aint broke don't fix it.
