Hello. I cannot open my HEM. I had version 1.06, and thinking this might be the problem, I updated to the most recent version: 1.11. I still cannot open HEM and get the following error:

The following error occurred when trying to open the database: Failed to establish a connection to '127.0.0.1'.

Then, after I click "OK" the following screen appears:
(I've attached a snapshot jpg)

I click "Connect" and get the following popup:

DB ControlPanel
A connection to PostgreSQL could not be made. Would you like to have Holdem Manager attempt to start the service?

I click "Yes" and get the following popup:

DB ControlPanel
Sorry, Holdem Manager was unable to start the service

I click "OK" and get the following popup:

DB ControlPanel
Holdem Manager has started the service. Please try again.

I click "OK" and am back at the same Database Control Panel screen as above that I've attached to this post as a jpg.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and I've already read through the FAQs pertaining to this error. I did all of the following months ago:

--Disable UAC
--Run all applicable .exe files as Administrator
--Add all applicable .exe files the to Windows Firewall as exceptions/allowable
--Disable Windows Defender
--Add all applicable .exe files the to my AVG Free 9.0 antivirus

I've also gone into Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Services > right click on PosgreSQl Server 8.4 > "Start"

I get the following popup error:

Services
Windows could not start the PostgreSQL Server 8.4 service on Local Computer.

Error 3: the system cannot find the path specified.

So, then I go into Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Services > right click on PosgreSQl Server 8.4 > "Properties" > Log On tab

I was going to copy and paste the username: .\postgres, into Notepad and check "Local System account" instead of "This account" and try and reboot my computer, but I am not able to copy and paste the hidden Password, nor do I even know what it is (it's 15 characters in length).

The only other tip I read that I have NOT tried yet is un-installing/re-installing PostgresSQL. I did not want to do this and risk losing all of my saved hands in my database before you could advise me.

I was able to open HEM and auto-import about 20 hours ago, but then I had a rare problem with my computer freezing. This was the second time this particular freezing problem occurred with my SONY VAIO laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00 GHz 2.00 GHz, 4.00 GB RAM). I was multi-tabling No Limit Holdem cash games on Full Tilt when the computer froze and there was a "crackling"/"frying" sound coming from the computer speakers. I removed the battery back, and then re-installed it and rebooted the computer after letting it sit for an hour. Then, I went into my VAIO Care and ran tests on the hard drive, One Click Care, and System TuneUp to make sure everything was ok. And now I cannot open HEM, so maybe something got messed up.

Could you please advise me what to do?

I un-installed and re-installed only HEM (not PostgreSQL) after copying my Config folder to my Desktop, but this has not fixed the problem.

Do you think I should un-install/re-install PostgreSQL, and if so, beforehand do I need to save certain file(s) to a memory stick so my saved data/hands/notes do not get deleted?

But, since I cannot open HEM, am I even able to Export all of my hands to a memory stick? I have copy and pasted the files: C: > HMarchive Full Tilt Poker (745 MB), and C: > HMarchive PokerStars (64 MB) to a flash drive. Do these 2 files contain all of my saved hands for HEM?

Does my HMarchive PokerStars file also contain my saved HEM notes?

Or, do you think my database has somehow gotten corrupted and I've actually lost all of my saved hands and HEM notes, or just the notes?

Please let me know what you think I should try next to fix this big problem.

Thank you.

1. You have a postgresql problem. Nothing you can do in HM do fix it.
2. To backup the data you should copy the hmarchive as you did but it doesn't contain notes, stats etc. only the hands. You should save the Postgresql data folder too.
3. From the message you get when trying to start the postgresql service i think your computer crash damaged your postgresql installation. I think you should try a reinstall of postgresql connecting to your old data folder:
FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Reinstall PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/71/Reinstall+PostgreSQL+Preserving+Old+Database)

If you can't figure it out: Please schedule a remote support session with our support. Email support@holdemmanager.net, with a link to this thread and your forum name, so we can setup a Teamviewer (http://www.holdemmanager.net/teamviewer) session.

Thanks. So, I should also copy the PostgreSQL > 8.4 > data folder to my memory stick? Should I copy the entire 8.4 folder, or do I only need the data folder?

Also, you say "the hmarchive doesn't contain notes, stats etc. only the hands." So does this mean I've completely lost the HM notes I've taken and all the stats I had on all my other players?

Thanks.

1. Yes, copy the data folder.

2. If you can't restore the data folder all your notes etc are lost. Thats why you should backup a database regularly.

Thanks. I guess I'm still not clear as to all of the folders/files for which I should make backup copies. I keep a copy of my entire Holdem Manager folder on my desktop, but that's it for HEM and PostgreSQL.

I'll keep a copy of the PostgreSQL data folder now too.

Do you know of any other files/folders I should make regular copies of, or a link to a recommended list?

Thanks a lot.

After having already un-installed and re-installed HEM by itself, I tried to do the same with PostgreSQL via the following link you provided me in a previous post:

3. From the message you get when trying to start the postgresql service i think your computer crash damaged your postgresql installation. I think you should try a reinstall of postgresql connecting to your old data folder:
FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Reinstall PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database

After the re-installation was complete, I tried to open HEM but I got the same error again--only this time I kept being taken to a popup asking me for another database username and I wasn't sure what to do. I also read another FAQ saying that the PostgreSQL re-installation should be the same version number as my old one in order for my old hands and notes to be able to work. So, considering the above link was for version 8.3 and my old version was 8.4, and that I was getting the same error popup again, I decided to un-install both PostgreSQL 8.3 and HEM.

I then re-installed the "Combo" option for HEM and PostgreSQL, and the version happened to be 8.4, which I was looking for. I was also able to Import old hands from my HMarchive Full Tilt Poker folder.

Other questions I have are:
1) Should I try to copy-paste and replace my saved Desktop PostgreSQL data folder into the new 8.4 folder to try and recover my saved HEM notes? Or, is there a specific file in my saved Desktop old data folder that contains my HEM notes that I can "Import" into my re-installed HEM?

2) For my old database, I had created the archive folders: HMarchive Full Tilt Poker and HMarchive PokerStars. Now, in HEM > Options > Configure Auto Import Folders when I click "Edit" under each of my Full Till and PokerStars locations the Archive Folder is set as HMArchive. Should I keep this new default archive folder the same for both sites, or can I use the above old specific archive name folders I created again?

Thank you.

netsrak

1) don't copy the postgresql data folder into a running installation. This will kill your new database

2) You can use whatever archive folder you like. Having them in different folders per site is a good idea.

I think I damaged my postgresql installation again like I did a while ago above, so I uninstalled/reinstalled postgresql and holdemmanager 1.11.05 using the Combo install option.

I then used the newer "Backup & Restore" option under HEM > File from an old backup file I saved to my desktop.

Before uninstalling my old postgresql and holdemmanager, I also saved to my desktop copies of the folders: Holdem Manager, Config, and data.

>>Should I now copy/paste all of the files in my desktop saved old Config and data folders into the new folders of the same names in my C: > Program Files (x86) > Holdem Manager and PosgreSQL > 8.4 folders?

You warned me the about the following above in the past, so I want to be sure before I copy/paste anything else:

1) don't copy the postgresql data folder into a running installation. This will kill your new database

Thanks.

You should copy the config folder to C:/Program Files/RVGSoftware/HoldemManager if you want to recover your old hud settings, but you dont need to copy anything from the other two folders, that data folder is your old PostgreSQL data files so as mentioned copying that to the data folder again would corrupt your database

Failed to establish connection... is a problem which comes up regularly especially after installing windows updates.
Usually it is fixed by following this procedure:
1. Reboot your computer
2. If that doesn't help look for the hidden system file postmaster.pid in the postgresql data folder, delete it and reboot your computer again.
3. Check the postgresql service in the windows services (control panel->administration). Sometimes it helps to change the Logon As.. to "local system account"
4. Check our FAQ:
FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Can't Connect / Failed to Start PostgreSQL (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/91/Can%27t+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQ L+)

But you should do regular backups of your database!

Control Panel > choose view by: small icons, should see Administrative tools

regarding backing up your database all the info you need is below.

If your doing a clean reinstall or moving HM to a new computer you should consider the following.

We have a backup and restore feature within Holdem Manager that makes it easy for you to backup all your settings, hand histories and files.
FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Backup & Restore (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/418/Backup+%26+Restore)

This is a new feature and there are some compatibility issues with it so if you have any problems you can do this manually by following the instructions below:

I have a very simple solution for what has been a complicated problem.

This has happened to me many times and this works every single time.

Make sure to keep a copy of the postgresql installation file backed up somewhere. Use Revo Uninstaller (it's free) to do a clean uninstall of Postgres 8.4. But MAKE SURE you do not delete the registry files or any remaining files. Skip those two steps and just do the uninstall.

Then, reinstall Postgres with your backed up .exe file. This works.

This is getting strange.

I took Bit Defender off my PC and HEM works fine. But I've put Bit Defender back on it now. I'm hoping it will work ok.

For some reason the firewall kept on changing. I followed the advice, but BitDefender kept on adding programmes to its list.

The fault lies with Bit Defender.

I've just been on their forums and three other people are having problems with it.

I'm getting the message - The following error occured when trying to open the database: Unable to read data from the transport connection.

An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue and the following guide will help you to fix this problem.

Go to Start > Programs (or all programs) > PostgreSQL 8.x > choose Stop Service

Start > Programs (or all programs) > PostgreSQL 8.x and choose Start Service. This may take some time and a black dos window may appear while its starting. If it fails to start delete the C:\Program Files\postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.Do not delete any other files

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Windows Firewall / Defender Problems (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/275/Windows+Firewall+%7B47%7D+Defender+Problems) - Windows Firewall / Defender Problems

If none of those worked Please reboot and try following these FAQs, step by step:

1) FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Can't Connect / Failed to Start PostgreSQL (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/91/Can't+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQL+ ) Can't Connect / Failed to Start PostgreSQL
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Reinstall PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/71/Reinstall+PostgreSQL+Preserving+Old+DatabaseReinst all) PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database

Failing that you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your archived hands using these instructions. Once you do this you wont have access to the hands in the old database but since you cant connect to the database your already in that situation. In the case its not possible to reconnect you can either contact the postgreSQL forums who may be able to help with advanced connection issues or you can reinstall. Ive listed 3 postgreSQL forums below
PostgreSQL Help Forums (http://forums.devshed.com/postgresql-help-21/)
PostgreSQL (http://old.nabble.com/PostgreSQL-f759.html)
PostgreSQL - dBforums (http://www.dbforums.com/postgresql/)

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL via Control Panel > Programs & Features (Add/Remove Programs on XP).
2) Use our combo installer to reinstall PostgreSQL. Make sure you un-check Holdem Manager during installation. http://rvgsoftware.fileburst.com/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

If that installer fails to install PostgreSQL, please reinstall PostgreSQL using the following instructions:
A) Go to Start > Programs (All Programs) > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right-Click on command prompt and choose Run As Administrator
net user postgres /delete
B) Try installing this version of PostgreSQL - http://rvgsoftware.fileburst.com/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

if that also fails Please follow step A again and try this version PostgreSQL: Choose a Mirror (http://wwwmaster.postgresql.org/download/mirrors-ftp/binary/v8.2.17/win32/postgresql-8.2.17-1.zip)

LOL Cheers Morny. I wish it was that easy! ;)

I've tried everything on that list - about 3 times. It hasn't worked. The only thing that works is removing Bit Defender.

Looks like I'm getting new security software. Can you recommend anything that works smoothly with Holdem Manager?

Thanks

It was the BitDefender programme update that messed it up. I just unistalled and changed the security programme. The geeks at BitDefender said they would sort out the problem, but they are full of it.

morny!

question about completing this step. step 1 says to uninstall my existing postgres. last time when netsrak helped me, he downloaded postgres 9.0. now i already have postgres 8.3 and postgres 9.0 on my computer. does that mean i should be uninstalling both versions, and then continue?

thanks!

edit: also netsrak, when he intalled 9.0, changed the port number to 5433. do i need to change this one as well, to say 5434?

edit 2: at step 10 'initialise database cluster', when i hit the box and click next it i get a 'The specified data directory does not contain an existing database cluster. Installing without initializing a database cluster in this case will produce an installation that will not start. Are you sure you want to continue without running initdb?'

edit 3: it was patsv that helped me last time, not netsrak, forgot

morny
12-04-2010, 05:26 AM
Yeah completely uninstall both versions

The secondary logon service is a standard windows service which is available on every windows computer. In the latest versions it is not started automatically. You need to start it via control panel > administrative tools > services. Starting it once should insure it works in the future also.

click on Start and go to Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt

* If you are on Vista, rightclick and choose "Run as Administrator".

A black box should appear. Type 'net user postgres /del' (without the quotes) and press enter.

The user is now deleted and you can install PostgreSQL.

Try installing 8.4 http://www.holdemmanager.com/Downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe, when you run the installer just tick PostgreSQL not Holdem Manager as its a combo installer but youve already HM installed so you dont need to do it again

I have tried everything I have found on this and other threads up to and including FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Reinstall PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database but have not tried a complete reinstall yet as I don't have my hands archived. Is there a way I can save my hands, stats, notes etc (I can't open HEM) before I do this?

Patvs
12-16-2010, 03:07 AM
If you can't open HM and can't connect to your database, you won't be able to:
-export hands
-export notes
-export HUD
-export bonus/rakeback info

Having said that.... you'll only lose your custom HUD if you run the full installer of HoldemManager again. All other info is stored in your SQL database.

Reinstalling SQL (and even uninstalling SQL) will save your old database, so you can savely 'experiment' without losing your old database.

First try to reboot.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it. And reboot.

If that doesn't help you will have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely

choostock
12-16-2010, 11:56 AM
PostgreSQL doesn't seem to Start again (which is the main problem).
The .pid file si not there as I deleted it when I had this problem previously (that time it was solved by reinstalling my firewall, this time having the security features uninstalled does not help).
A full install of HEM does not work as it fails due to not being able to Connect to Database (which I think is the original problem).

Are you saying that if I completely reinstall PostgreSQL I will still have access to my database, or that doing everything up to that point will mean I still have access to my database? It is the hands which I have played I am worried about losing, I can replace everything else which I need.

Go to your PostgreSQL folder in Program Files/

Were you previously using SQL 8.4?
And you reinstalled SQL 8.4?
Or were you using 8.3 before?

If you can create a new database, just reimport all your hands into the new database?

hello, found something on bitdefender french forum, it makes my HM works good. ain't Got time to translate, maybe tomorrow if you ask for

- ouvrir bitdefender

good luck...
