More Ram for large Databases?

I have a very large DB (220gb, over 50 million hands). Would there be any performance benefit of 12gb of ram or even 24GB? I know all that ram would be overkill for most applications. But I was wondering if HEM/Postgres would see any benefit from it.

Depends on your operating system. If it's 32 bit then the max it can use is 8Gb. If you have a 64 bit O/S then you can throw considerably more at it. Adding more RAM never hurts, but does not always help a particular situation.

I'm obviously not going to have all that ram on OS that will only recognize 4gb.
