I'm able to get HEM installed up until the point shown in the attached JPEG. Can someone help me get past this please?

Try rebooting in case the port is locked up or something

If that installer fails to install PostgreSQL, please reinstall PostgreSQL using the following instructions:
A) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right-Click > Run As Administrator

net user postgres /delete
B) Reboot.
C) Try installing this version of PostgreSQL - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

No luck with it. When I tried the command prompt it said that postgres couldn't be found so I went straight to the installer but that said it couldn't install postgres either.

This version should work so PostgreSQL: Choose a Mirror (http://wwwmaster.postgresql.org/download/mirrors-ftp/binary/v8.2.13/win32/postgresql-8.2.13-1.zip)

I'm able to get it begin installing however it stops near the end saying the password used isn't complex/long enough. For the first password I used a generated one and for the second password I used my own. Should I change my own?

Sounds like there is something wrong with the system, can you try using the latest windows update and update to the newest service pack, this should repair any corrupt system files if there is any, you might need to reboot several times and run the update again. When finished if your still getting the error let me know what version of Windows and service pack your using (right click on the My Computer icon and choose properties and it will tell you)

I've updated Vista and tried it again. Still no success. I'm using SP1 by the way.

SP1 is not the latest Vista.

But i don't think thats the cause of the problem.

You should try a new installation of postgresql.

Uninstall your current installation, delete the user postgres:
open a command box and type
net user postgres /delete

Now download the latest postgresql version from PostgreSQL: The world's most advanced open source database (http://www.postgresql.org) and install it.
Ignore any messages about your password, this are just warnings. Use postgrespass as password for the postgresql user.

After successful installation of postgresql install Holdemmanager without postgresql.

Windows update isn't giving me an option to download SP2.

The command prompt can't find any user under postgres.

I'll try downloading and installing the latest version and see if it works.

I get the error 'The password specified does not meet the local or demain policy. Check the minimum password length, complexity and password history requirements.'

Windows update isn't giving me an option to download SP2.

Then your system is having some problems. SP2 has been available for a long time. I would suggest you try to get this resolved or perhaps reformat completely.

The command prompt can't find any user under postgres.

What does it display if you type in this command?

net user

I get the error 'The password specified does not meet the local or demain policy. Check the minimum password length, complexity and password history requirements.'

I don't think I have ever seen this error. Is your windows user account an administrator account or limited user?

I'm downloading it separately from the MS website so I'll get it installed when it's done.

net user

User accounts for *name*-PC:
*name*, Administrator, Guest

I don't think I have ever seen this error. Is your windows user account an administrator account or limited user?

It's the only account on there (apart from some HP credentials thing but that's useless). I've tried opening both HEM and postgres as an administrator but still get the same problems.

I'll get SP2 sorted and let you know what happens.

When I start Holdem Manager it says: 'Failed to establish a connection to 127.0.0.1'.

Then I click ok and I get a postgres screen with Server Name, Port number, Login name and Password. When I click on connect it says: A connection to Postgres could not be made.

What should I do?

Still getting the same errors after installing SP2. Short of a complete reformat, the only other thing I can think of is perhaps manually opening port 5432?

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.

First try to reboot.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Windows Firewall / Defender Problems (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/275/Windows+Firewall+%7B47%7D+Defender+Problems) - Windows Firewall / Defender Problems

Please try following these FAQs, step by step:

2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Reinstall PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/71/Reinstall+PostgreSQL+Preserving+Old+DatabaseReinst all) PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database
3) Still Can't Connect to PosgreSQL? Try This! - Holdem Manager Forums (http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261)

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Use our combo installer to reinstall PostgreSQL. Make sure you un-check Holdem Manager during installation. http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

If that installer fails to install PostgreSQL, please reinstall PostgreSQL using the following instructions:
A) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right-Click > Run As Administrator

Ok, I have tried all these things, but it won't work. The link in step 2 installs it almost completely, but in the end it says: Sorry, could not install postgres.

The link in step C stopped at about 50% (I showed it in a previous post in a picture).

No Postgres is removed from my computer (I think). There are no folders in the start --> programs list and in the software list it is also not there.

There are only some (4) folders in program files\PostgreSQL.

What should be my next step?

Please schedule a remote support session with our support. Email support@holdemmanager.net, with a link to this thread and your forum name, so we can setup a Teamviewer (http://www.holdemmanager.net/teamviewer) session.

I would like to know what the final solution to this problem was. I have been having the same problem on a fresh install of vista with all updates installed and firewall and defender turned off.

yes multiple times. I have yet to get a full installation out of any of the postgresql versions 8.3,8.4,9b. None seem to be creating any of the config files needed to run. I have reinstalled Vista again, disabled defender and firewall. I make sure that I delete the user account after each uninstall with crap cleaner. It seems the one click installer for 8.4 is not friendly towards windows and the support doesn't seem to be either. I'm not quite sure what else to do.

Which operating system?
Are you using any 3rd party firewall, anti-spyware, adaware, tuning or registry cleaning programs? and if yes which ones?

Please try this postgresql Version: PostgreSQL: Choose a Mirror (http://wwwmaster.postgresql.org/download/mirrors-ftp/binary/v8.2.19/win32/postgresql-8.2.19-1.zip)

Hi , coming to this post a bit late. But i have the same problem mentioned above.
I get the same error message that Postgre could not be installed and i am guessing that this happens because of the password complexity requirements set into my computed ( which belongs to a domain ) .
Is there a fix to it ?

holdem manager has detected that you have password complexity requirements enabled on this system. for this reason, setup will be using a stronger, more complex password for postgresql .

Try using:

h0ld3mManag3r!

If that doesnt help:

1. Go to C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.x\data, move the the pg_hba file to your Desktop and open it with notepad.
2. Scroll to the bottom and change all md5 to trust. Save and close the file
3. Move the file back to the data folder
4. Restart the PostgreSQL service: Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services

HM should accept any password now.
