Hi, I,ve just built a new comp with win7 64bit and went to the HEM downloader page and downloaded HEM. When I installed I used the option to install postgres at the same time. Now I right clicked on HEM and ran as administrator like I was supposed to and everything seemed to be fine. When I rebooted it has my user name to log in and also has postgres as if it is a user and you have to log in with a password. I can't remember getting a set up page for postgres like I did last time I installed it, you know with the ports etc. Also when I open HEM it seems to work fine but some of the words are cut off eg. Where it says 'select an import option' , half of the word option is covered by the 'import file(s)' button.

That login screen usually happens the first time, should see it anymore

Sounds like your dpi settings, you need to reduce it to 96dpi and then reboot

if its windows 7

......

If it continues to appear beyond the first reboot please let me know as I am trying to reproduce this bug so we can cure it.

This is what will need to be done if it continues:

@fozzy71. Yes this user account kept happening and was still there after everytime I rebooted. I've removed user account and it is gone now. Morny yes I think it was my dpi setting and have changed that back.
BUT now I have another problem. When I open HEM I'm getting the 'failed to establish a connection to 127.0.0.1' When I click ok the DB Control panel pops up. When I click connect it says 'a connection to postgres could not be made would you like for HEM to try and start the service' When I click Yes it says 'sorry HEM was unable to start the service' Then when I click ok it says 'HEM has started the service please try again'. But still no joy.
I have uninstalled Kaspersky 2010 and will now try to take firewall restrictions off the HM,Hud,DBcont,postgre,pg_ctl. Have to reboot now.

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.

FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Can't Connect / Failed to Start PostgreSQL (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/91/Can't+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQL+ )

First try to reboot.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Windows Firewall / Defender Problems (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/275/Windows+Firewall+%7B47%7D+Defender+Problems)

Please try following these FAQs, step by step:

1) FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Can't Connect / Failed to Start PostgreSQL (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/91/Can't+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQL+ )
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Reinstall PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/71/Reinstall+PostgreSQL+Preserving+Old+Database)
3) Still Can't Connect to PosgreSQL? Try This! - Holdem Manager Forums (http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261)

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Use our combo installer to reinstall PostgreSQL. Make sure you un-check Holdem Manager during installation. http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

If that installer fails to install PostgreSQL, please reinstall PostgreSQL using the following instructions:
A) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right-Click > Run As Administrator

net user postgres /delete
B) Reboot.
C) Try installing this version of PostgreSQL - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

SUCCESS!!! I uninstalled Kaspersky 2010, allowed access for the 5 programs through windows firewall and windows defender. Still didn't work. So then I uninstalled both Holdem Manager and PostgreSQL. Then re installed from the dual install that I downloaded yesterday and it is working fine so far. Now I will attempt to re install Kaspersky and if I have to I will set the exclusions. By the way fozzy, when I re installed postrges showed up again as a user account and was still a user account after I re booted. I have since deleted the user account and it is all working fine. Thanks fozzy and morny for all your help.

Did you reinstall Kaspersky?

Please check our FAQ for Kaspersky: FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Using Kaspersky Internet Security 2010? (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/127/Using+Kaspersky+Internet+Security+2010%3F+)

Yes the first time I did re instal Kaspersky and therefore thought it was the problem but... Now like I said I uninstalled HEM, PostgreSQL, and Kaspersky. Then I reinstalled HEM and PostgreSQL using the dual install download and it was working perfectly. I restarted my computer and it was still fine. Then I shut down windows for about 5 minutes and now when I turn it on I'm getting the can't connect message again. I havn't installed Kaspersky yet and it is still not working. How can shutting down the computer stop HEM from connecting? I thought I was lost at the start.

I just don't get it. If I uninstall everything and reinstall it works. Then if I shut down windows and re start it doesn't. WTF. I'm going bald quickly.

HEM uses network (tcp/ip sockets) functions to communicate with postgresql.
This could be affected by a reboot.

Please schedule a remote support session with our support. Email support@holdemmanager.net, with a link to this thread and your forum name, so we can setup a Teamviewer (http://www.holdemmanager.net/teamviewer) session.

Thanks netsrak that is my next option. I,ve gone through it all again and 1 by 1 started firewall, defender, re booting between each step and making sure the exceptions were set correctly. So far I have firewall and defender running and all seems well. One thing I changed in firewall was I only had it set to exclude the 5 programs in home/work (private). I added it to exclude for public as well. Could this have been the problem and is it safe to do this? Anyway I'll re boot some more before adding Kaspersky and if this fails I will e-mail for a teamviewer session. Thanks.

Disable Defender completely imo. Replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials or your Kaspersky. Is your Kaspersky just anti-virus or firewall also?

You are installing PostgreSQL 8.4? Perhaps try 8.3 and see if it is more stable.

*Please update to the latest beta - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmBetaUpdate.exe

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right-Click > Run As Administrator

net user postgres /delete
3) Reboot.
4) Try installing this version of PostgreSQL - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

I got it working yesterday and so far it all seems ok. All I think I changed was like I said above, for the firewall to exclude from public as well.
Anyway yes my Kaspersky is firewall as well and as soon as I install it, windows firewall is disabled. I have also disabled defender but it seemed to be working fine with it.
I also downloaded the beta update. Hopefully now I won't have any more problems.
Thanks to everyone who helped out, much appreciated.
