I haven't used HEM in awhile, or played poker in awhile. I did install more RAM into my CPU. HEM was working perfectly before but now it can't connect to postgre. When I open HEM it says, "The following error occurred when trying to open the database: Failed to establish a connetion to '127.0.0.1'. " Then it takes me to the Database Control Panel and when I hit connect it says, "A connection to PostgreSQL could not be made. Would you like to have Holdem Manager attempt to start the service?" I hit yes and I am unable to start the service.

i spent two days on mine before I was able to get it to work.
try first going to adminstrative services on control panel
and doing this
1. restart secondary logins
2. start sql sever (dont' brother with postregres right now in the services)
if you can't , i had to put mine on local system account and check mark it before my sql server would start otherwise i got mcc error and I couldn't figure it out.. then you waste time uninstalling postgres,, hem,, updating windows.
3.make sure all the sql services are started then restart your post gres servers
3. oh yes if you do the combo install you won't need to install postgres seperately. if you decided to go for the fresh install of hem,,
however make you archive your folders as you will have to reload your database if you don't. (for some reason my archive was only 3000 hands so i had to reload my database anywas)

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.

First try to reboot.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Windows Firewall / Defender Problems (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/275/Windows+Firewall+%7B47%7D+Defender+Problems)

Please try following these FAQs, step by step:

1) FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Can't Connect / Failed to Start PostgreSQL (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/91/Can't+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQL+ )
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Reinstall PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/71/Reinstall+PostgreSQL+Preserving+Old+Database)
3) Still Can't Connect to PosgreSQL? Try This! - Holdem Manager Forums (http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261)

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Use our combo installer to reinstall PostgreSQL. Make sure you un-check Holdem Manager during installation. http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

If that installer fails to install PostgreSQL, please reinstall PostgreSQL using the following instructions:
A) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right-Click > Run As Administrator

net user postgres /delete
B) Reboot.
C) Try installing this version of PostgreSQL - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

You need to import any of your original/archived hands you have saved. Your \HMArchive is likely not in your \Holdem Manager directory. We normally suggest you use C:\HMArchive, but you may have put it anywhere.

To verify the location: Options > Configure Auto Import Folders > Edit > Archive Folder: ___________________

FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Warning: You have XXX Hand History Files in your Auto Import Folders (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/119/Warning:+You+have+XXX+Hand+History+Files+in+your+A uto+Import+Folders)

The archive should be organized by \Month\DayOfMonth (example: D:\HMArchive\2009\07\31).

If you play a site like stars/ftp you can also email their support and ask for all your old hand histories and tourney summaries.
