Hello. I've been having a lagging/freezing problem on PokerStars for a few weeks now. The whole time I'm playing, my tables are constantly lagging and freezing for a few seconds. I have not yet had my whole computer freeze though.

I was wondering if someone might know if this has anything to do with the latest updates from PokerStars?

I am new to Stars, but I have been playing on Full Tilt for a while, and I haven't been havng these same freezing issues on Full Tilt. So, it shouldn't have anything to do with the number of hands I have saved in HEM.

I've done most of the recommended computer adjustments, so I was just wondering if there's anything else I can do (short of getting a newer/faster computer) that might be particular to Stars?

I even tried the new RUSH advisements to turn OFF ClearType text and change my Windows theme to Classic, but these two changes did not fix the problem.

Thank you.

Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo P7350
RAM 4.00 GB
228/287 GB of free space on hard drive

HEM version 1.10.03b

I have the same problems on Stars since some weeks, i have tried everything including setting up a new computer (windows 7), testing an older HM version and all the other things i normally recommend ;)
but its still lagging when i have 7 or more tables open.

I'm pretty sure its something in the Stars client.

So, do you think there's anything we can do? Have you emailed Stars' support and asked them for advice? Maybe I'll email them and see what they say.

Thanks.

At the moment i'm out of ideas - feel free to contact Stars Support. I will try the same in the next days.

To save time...

There's an option in PS on your PC to check your network status & log/report to PS. Might be worth doing this & include with your PS email, because they'll only come back to you & ask for one anyway

PS support acknowledges emails quickly, but I've noticed that technical PS support has a large backlog since the new year & they are treating them in date order - you could be waiting for a proper answer for weeks. A query I raised about notes.xml is 8 weeks old & still open.

What other app's do you use when playing stars? TableNinja or other hotkey programs? Try disabling the table highlighting (Frames in TN). Can you post a screen shot when it is lagging of your task manager's processes tab, sorted in descending order by CPU and Memory.

fozzy71: I do NOT use any other app's while playing on Stars--no TableNinja or other hotkey programs. I while try to post a screen shot when it is lagging of my task manager's processes tab, sorted in descending order by CPU and Memory. \

Also, I emailed PokerStars' support and here is their response:

First you may wish to learn more about disconnections and the
common causes found on our Frequently Asked Questions web page.

PokerStars.com - Poker Software Frequently Asked Questions (http://www.pokerstars.com/poker/download/faq/#a15)

If the information here fails to assist you in isolating the cause of your
disconnection, please provide us with the following information so we may help.

Among the things we will need to know are:

Connection Type (i.e. Dial-Up, Cable, DSL, Satellite, etc…)
ISP (Internet Service Provider, company name that provides your Internet
service)
Router/Modem (i.e Dlink DI-624, Linksys WRTG54GS, etc…)

It would also be helpful if you provided us with the Network Status Report
from our software. In the PokerStars software click on “Help” -> “Network
Status”. When this dialog opens click on the “Report” button. This report is
saved to your PokerStars settings folder which you will need to locate and
send to us for review along with the information requested above. You can
quickly locate this report by going to the main lobby and click on “Help” ->
“Open My Settings Folder”. The file name will be “NetworkStatusReport.log”
and you will need to attach that file to your email. It is best to run this
report when you lose connectivity to the site.

Once we have received the above information we will have one of our
connectivity specialists take a more in-depth review and provide a response.

I made some more tests and i think (not 100% sure) that it becomes a little bit better when hiding the windows taskbar and grouping similar taskbar entries. I also disabled the attention sound in the stars client.

Have you verified that your Pokerstars notes file is not bloated by the bug they introduced back in December? They converted from a text format to an XML format at that time and did not handle players with unusual characters correctly, causing the xml file to become filled with garbage and grow extremely large. This XML file appears to be loaded into when the first table is opened after the Stars client is started.

You can verify this by opening the Stars client without any other software running. Just start randomingly opening up cash games tables and see if it begins to lag.

If this is the case, navigate to your setting folders from the Stars Client: Click on Help -> Open My Settings Folder.
Check the the size of the notes.xml file. It should NOT be 100s of MB large.

I am not sure what a typical file size is but I ran into issue when my notes.xml file grew to ~471MB and become noticeable in mid-January. After correcting the file, it shrank to 45KB (kb?).

Below is one a few links where it was discussed. I opted for manually correcting the file myself.

Hope this helps...

How do I do these 2 things?

Yes, I fixed this a little while ago. I emailed their support and they told me how to do it. I believe they've had an update since then that corrects for the bug. Not positive though. Thanks for the tip anyways.

Right click on the windows taskbar, there is sth. like properties. I have no english windows available so i can't guide you. But if you search for it via Google you should find a lot of help.
