I've just had the "Vista Internet Security 2010" virus. it took me a while to get through it but Malwarebytes, SAS and AVG are all showing as clear now (just in case, i got this virus from mma-core when i clicked on one of the videos so if you happen to use the site be careful).

Since the virus i can't get into HEM. I'm getting the "failed to establish a connection to 127...." etc. i know there is an faq for this (although some of it is a bit over my head, i'm not even sure what it is i'm fixing!) but i'm wondering if anyone has had experience with this virus or a similar one and has any idea what they think might have happened (and therefore an easy fix).

if not, would it be as straight forward as reinstalling postgres and i would still have my old db? also, would you guys advise a full reformat or would you be happy with all the scans coming up clean?

After a virus you should always start with a clean reinstall - you are managing your poker accounts with hopefully a lot of money in them on this computer.
You should always be on the safe side.

thanks for the reply. will it be possible to save my HEM db?

do you happen to have any general advice on reformatting? I've never done it before, is it straightforward? is it safe to transfer all my stuff onto an external hard drive?

As long as your anti-virus didnt quarantine any of the \postgresql files, it might be. If it removed any of those files it is likely dead now.

First try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Windows Firewall / Defender Problems (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/275/Windows+Firewall+%7B47%7D+Defender+Problems)

Please try following these FAQs, step by step:

1) FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Can't Connect / Failed to Start PostgreSQL (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/91/Can't+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQL+ )
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Reinstall PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/71/Reinstall+PostgreSQL+Preserving+Old+Database)
3) Still Can't Connect to PosgreSQL? Try This! - Holdem Manager Forums (http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261)

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Use our combo installer to reinstall PostgreSQL. Make sure you un-check Holdem Manager during installation. http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

If that installer fails to install PostgreSQL, please reinstall PostgreSQL using the following instructions:
A) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right-Click > Run As Administrator

net user postgres /delete
B) Reboot.
C) Try installing this version of PostgreSQL - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

do you happen to have any general advice on reformatting? I've never done it before, is it straightforward?

Does your PC have a Restore partition on the PC or is it older and came with an Original Operating System Restore disc? Either way it's fairly simple. I have done the latter many times on my XP machine. I have not yet done it to my vista PC that has a restore partition, but I expect it to be the same or easier.

is it safe to transfer all my stuff onto an external hard drive?

Yes. You want to make sure you back up your entire \holdem manager folder as well as your \HMArchive. Your \HMArchive is likely not in your \Holdem Manager directory. We normally suggest you use C:\HMArchive, but you may have put it anywhere.

To verify the location: Options > Configure Auto Import Folders > Edit > Archive Folder: ___________________

FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Warning: You have XXX Hand History Files in your Auto Import Folders (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/119/Warning:+You+have+XXX+Hand+History+Files+in+your+A uto+Import+Folders)

The archive should be organized by \Month\DayOfMonth (example: D:\HMArchive\2009\07\31).

If you play a site like stars/ftp you can email their support and ask for all your old hand histories and tourney summaries.
