Please try the basic postgresql installation from ruby on rails postgresql open at postgresq.org (http://www.postgresq.org)

Try 8.4 first, if that doesn't work try 8.3.

Please come back if you need further help.

What error messages do you get?

Any 3rd party firewall or anty-spyware, adaware etc. in use?
Which virus scanner?

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue. It seems to be a connection issue so ive listed all the connection solutions below, some may not apply and if so just skip to the next one

First try to reboot.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Windows Firewall / Defender Problems (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/275/Windows+Firewall+%7B47%7D+Defender+Problems) - Windows Firewall / Defender Problems

Please try following these FAQs, step by step:

1) FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Can't Connect / Failed to Start PostgreSQL (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/91/Can't+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQL+ ) Can't Connect / Failed to Start PostgreSQL
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - FAQ - Hold'em Manager Poker Tracking Software :: Reinstall PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database (http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/71/Reinstall+PostgreSQL+Preserving+Old+DatabaseReinst all) PostgreSQL Preserving Old Database
3) Still Can't Connect to PosgreSQL? Try This! - Holdem Manager Forums (http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261)

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Use our combo installer to reinstall PostgreSQL. Make sure you un-check Holdem Manager during installation. http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

If that installer fails to install PostgreSQL, please reinstall PostgreSQL using the following instructions:
A) Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right-Click > Run As Administrator

net user postgres /delete
B) Reboot.
C) Try installing this version of PostgreSQL - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

Youll need to refer to user manual or contact their support as im not familiar with it but i would say its either inbound rules or outbound rules

Please give us details about your computer system, firewall etc.

Windows 7 Ultimate, 4GB DDR3 Ram, Raptor 10000 RPM drive, Intel 4x Core Duo, Geforce 260.

Just made this box two days ago, turned off all firewalls, UAC. No 3rd party AV/AS.

First installed Combo installer, couldn't finish install.
Uninstalled/Deleted/Dos removed Postgres user,
Installed older version of Postgres as suggested in another thread, doesn't finish install.

I don't know what else to do.

I had a similar problem. Solved by going to Windows Key + R to bring up the Run dialog. Type "services.msc" (without the quotes). Scroll down to "PostgresSQL Server 8.x" and right click. Select "Start". Now retry HEM. This worked for me.

Im having the same problem... Whats the solution?

Solutions:
1. Reboot your computer
2. If that doesn't help look for the hidden system file postmaster.pid in the postgresql data folder, delete it and reboot your computer again.
3. Check the postgresql service in the windows services (control panel->administration). Sometimes it helps to change the Logon As.. to "local system account"
4. Check our FAQ:
