After getting the error 'couldn't establish connection blabla' I decided to download the beta version.

The problems were gone but I ran into a bigger problem: It couldn't find my old database. I created a knew one and everything works well again, but is there a way to find my old dabatase or import the handhistory?

Thanks in advance!

After getting the error 'couldn't establish connection blabla'

This is a DB connection issue. This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.

First try to reboot.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/275/Windows+Firewall+%7B47%7D+Defender+Problems

Please try following these FAQs, step by step:

1) http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/91/Can't+Connect+%7B47%7D+Failed+to+Start+PostgreSQL+
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/71/Reinstall+PostgreSQL+Preserving+Old+Database
3) http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Use our combo installer to reinstall PostgreSQL. Make sure you un-check Holdem Manager during installation. http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Holdem_Manager_Setup.exe

I decided to download the beta version.

:(

You downloaded the full installer instead of the update file. I just sent a letter to our management to fix our downloads page. It needs bigger links/buttons and full descriptions of each download.

The problems were gone but I ran into a bigger problem: It couldn't find my old database.

You left the PostgreSQL option checked and it installed a brand new postgresql database and removed the old connection.

To try and save the old DB we need to uninstall the current version and reinstall the old version using a particular method to make sure we dont over-write the old data.

Or you can import all your original/archived hands. Your \HMArchive is likely not in your \Holdem Manager directory. We normally suggest you use C:\HMArchive, but you may have put it anywhere.

To verify the location: Options > Configure Auto Import Folders > Edit > Archive Folder: ___________________

The archive should be organized by \Month\DayOfMonth (example: D:\HMArchive\2009\07\31).

If you play a site like stars/ftp you can email their support and ask for all your old hand histories and tourney summaries.
