Windows XP Service Pack 3. Fresh install. No virus/malware/ad software/firewall/security programs. Turned off windows firewall, added exceptions and generally followed the given guide but to no avail. The combo installer reports "Sorry, could not install PostgreSQL" after clicking ok, the below message was displayed in the details window :

try pass: postgres
try pass: postgrespass
Connection to database failed: -->could not connect to server:
Connection refused (...Is the server running on host "127.0.0.1" and
accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432?<--error
1
testclient return status: 1
...
...
...
try pass: postgres
try pass: postgrespass
Connection to database failed: -->server closed the connection unexpectedly
This probably means the server terminated abnormally
before or while processing the request.
<--error

How do i overcome this? please dont tell me its a firewall issue cause its not as its a fresh install and i have turned off windows firewall and automatic updates. I have using HEM for over a year and this has recently cropped up.

Thanks

Please download a postgresql installer from www.postgresql.org and try a standard installation of 8.4 or 8.3
