View Full Version : Combo Installer: "Sorry, could not install PostgreSQL"

Pureman

Windows Vista 64, fully updated.
No Security software, Windows defender and Windows firewall disabled. I even added the .exes you advised to the exception list before disabling the firewall.

After installing HEM and SQL with the combo installer I'm getting the error: "Sorry, could not install PostgreSQL." If I click on details I'm getting the following information: "Connection to database failed: --> could not connect to server: Connection refused (...Is the server running on host "127.0.0.1" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? <-- error"
I tried installing postgres and HEM seperatly, that did not allow me to connect to postgres either, giving me the same error (did a clean uninstall of postgres after this).

I've been using HEM and Postgres for ~3 years now and this is the first time I have a problem with postgresql. The only thing that changed in my computer is that I now have two HDDs instead of one.

Any idea how to fix this?

1) Use www.revouninstaller.com to uninstall postgresql.

2) run the command - start > programs > accessories > command prompt > right-click > run as administrator

net user postgres /delete

3) reboot

4) Install this version of PostgreSQL - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

If you have problems with that as well, please email me at fozzy@holdemmanager.net, with a link to this thread, and your forum name, so we can schedule a Teamviewer session. Download the Teamviewer Quick Support Module - http://www.holdemmanager.net/teamviewer. Please let me know what time zone you are in and what time/days are convenient for you. I schedule support from 12:00 - 22:00 EDT, 7 days a week.

Problem solved. I was using a Killer Nic (Network Card) from Bigfoot Networks (http://www.killernic.com/). That card blocked the SQL install. Disabling the firewall etc on the Network card does not help. You have to completly deinstall and remove the network card from your system if you want to run PostgreSQL.

On a side note, the card ist a piece of shit. All it does is cause problems. It does not reduce lag, the games will not feel "smoother" - hands down the card does not help with anything. Don't buy it, I regret that I bought it :-).

My problems are the same as the beginner of this thread.
I have a HP Laptop with Vista Proffessional.
I have completely removed Norton Antivirus, disebled the firewall and followed every step in the faq:s.

At the end of every installation I recieve the message: "Sorry, could not install PostgreSQL."
The details are: "Connection to database failed: --> could not connect to server: Connection refused (...Is the server running on host "127.0.0.1" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? <-- error"
I also tried installing postgres and HEM seperatly, neither of it have worked.
All tips and new links in this topic have so far not solved the problem for me. Any more suggestions perhaps...? /Regards

Did you also try version 8.2 i posted 3-4 posts up?

if so please email me and we can do a teamviewer session, just download teamviewer from TeamViewer - Free Remote Access and Remote Desktop Sharing over the Internet (http://www.teamviewer.com) and let me know a suitable time GMT in advance. Teamviewer allows me to access your computer to fix the problem.

When we agree a suitable time you just need to send me the ID and password that Teamviewer creates to get access to your PC

Hello,

This is my first post and I'm new to HM and having nothing but problems getting this started.

I've been trying everything for the last 4 hours in the posts regarding installing PostgreSQL 8.4 and 8.3 and when I get to the end of the install it's telling me "Could not install blah, blah, blah."

I've opened up the ports and allowed all the HM .exe's access through firewall. still to no avail.

I've bought many, many other forms of poker software in the past and have never had soooooo many problems getting them started.

I'm using XP SP2 and have tried everything possible to get this going. I'm about to give up!!!

Please help

Thanks

I have gone through several SQL furums to find a soloution but so far -nothing..
It doesn't matter if the postgre comes up with an own password of bizare length, the same thing happens anyway...

Hi,

I've been using HEM and everything I have POSTGres problems I just use the combo installer.

However this time I am facing the PostGres problem "Sorry cannot install ..."

I tried downloading Postgres separately and yet it cannot work.

I also completely uninstalled it and deleted away whatever files on my C:/ under the PostGres file and tried reinstalling but it does not seem to work.

Can I have more help please? I am actually a computer retard but will try my best to follow all the instructions given but please be patient with me if I ask seemingly stupid questions.

Thank you very Much!

when uninstalled Postfres - have you deleted user account too?
if no - open Command Prompt (under Vista\Win7 - as admin by right click)
type there:
net user postgres /delete
with spaces between the words and no space between / and delete.
and press Enter
This should be done after every unsuccessive Postgre installation

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I have used that command after un-installation and even manually deleted the folder in the program files because during uninstalling it mentioned not being to delete the folder etc.

I also downloaded postgres from the PostgreSQL: The world's most advanced open source database (http://www.postgresql.org/) website and had it installed.

When I start HEM the "connect to PostgreSQL" pops up and requires me to input the server name etc etc etc but "A connection to PostgreSQL could not be made. I click Yes to attempt to start the service and it is unable to start up.

I just uninstalled and reinstalled to make sure I unticked the PostgresSQL and separately installed HEM. Same thing happens :

Failed to make a connection to 127.0.0.1

pls help

Make sure windows is fully updated and change your Windows Control Panel > Regional Settings Format to English (USA).

The secondary logon service is a standard windows service which is available on every windows computer. In the latest versions it is not started automatically. You need to start it via control panel > administrative tools > services > secondary logon > right-click > start AND right-click > properties > startup type: automatic.

restart your pc

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) run the command - start > programs > accessories > command prompt > right-click > run as administrator

net user postgres /delete
4) reboot.
5) Install PostgreSQL 8.3.9 from this link - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

You installed 9.2 from their site? If it installed and is working you can give that a try but in our testing of 9.2 there were some problems with some of the HM2 features such as the backup/restore and tuning so the same problems may exist in HM1. If you have any problems with 9.2 please try using the 8.2 link that Pat posted.

Hello. I dont have anti-virus, and firewall. Also my host file is ok. I use windows xp, probably SP3.

It will probably be easier for all concerned to just schedule a remote support session and help you fix it remotely.

1 - Make sure you have updated your windows using the "Windows Update" feature Microsoft Windows Update (http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/thanks.aspx?ln=en&&thankspage=5)
* - Make sure windows is fully updated until 'No New Important Updates are Found' (this may require multiple restarts and multiple 'check for updates'), including Internet Explorer 9 (even if you use a different web browser) and change your Windows Control Panel > Regional Settings Format to English (USA).
2 - Make sure Holdem Manager is updated to the latest version Downloads and Manuals - Hold'Em Manager, Omaha Manager & HM Apps (http://www.holdemmanager.com/store/downloads-manuals.php)
3 - Please make sure you have access to a good connection, we cannot provide support on really slow connections

I never unplugged it and as soon as i shut down HEM1 a prompt came up tellin me to reformat my ext drive, I clicked cancel and now its unreadable? WTF?!!!

I had an external drive die on me this summer. I was able to finally get it hooked up to a computer that would read it and pull the info off. Then, I couldn't read it any more.

Since then, I'm paranoid and monthly, backup my HD to a drive I keep in my safe and also to my laptop's 2ndary HDD.

Sorry posted this already in athother thread but i found this one had more info in it.

Pretty much stuck like others here. I tried to install version 8.3.9 but that gets stuck in the same spot when im installing /data file.

I used revo uninstaller to uninstall the earlier version.

I've been at this for hours now trying to uninstall it and re-install it.

Nothing works. I used the comand promt uninstall thing. I deleted all the user data by hand. I deleted registry files.

Yet still when ever i try to install it again it says it gets stuck at the /data file. Then when i look in the process explorer i can see the data base is using 50% CPU. always like this, its doing something. even if i try to delete everything it seems like there is something still left on my computer and when i load it up it is trying to do what every it was stuck on before.

update:
Seems it doesnt matter what version i try or how many uninstalls and reinstalls everytime it installs with an error and uses 50% of my CPU when postgres.exe is running.

For a new install this just shouldnt happen. I dont understand how it can happen if i delete all postgres files and make a fresh install it should just work no?

2 - Make sure Holdem Manager is updated to the latest version Downloads and Manuals - Hold'Em Manager, Omaha Manager & HM Apps (http://www.holdemmanager.com/store/downloads-manuals.php)
3 - Please make sure you have access to a good connection, we cannot provide support on really slow connections
4 - Please allow us full access otherwise it slows down the speed at which we can fix the issue

If anyone is having problems with installing postgreSQL and getting getting Visual C++ 2005/2008/2010 redistributables errors then I found a simple solution.

1. Install manually postgreSQL at PostgreSQL: Windows installers (http://www.postgresql.org/download/windows/)

2.Open command prompt and locate to the directory of your installed postgresql exe file
(Example) Type in command prompt: cd C:\Users\AronI\Downloads

3.Type in your version of postgreSQ.exe followed by --install_runtimes 0
(Example) Type in command prompt: postgresql-8.4.17-1-windows.exe --install_runtimes 0

Hope it helps
