it says cant connect to server 127.0.0.1 and tries to start postgres itself but it cant be started. sigh

ive also downloaded just the patch which is what i should've done in the first place but it does nothing different now since i presume the combo installer does the same but just re installs postgres and that seems to be the problem.

You dont use the combo installer to update. That is for a first time installation.

What version of postgresql did you have installed? 8.4, like the combo installer, or 8.3?

To update you want to use one of the smaller update files:

http://www.holdemmanager.net/hmbetaupdate

http://www.holdemmanager.net/hmupdate

To try and reinstall postgresql and use your existing database (\data folder):

Please update to the latest beta - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmBetaUpdate.exe

For reinstalling SQL to the same DB, follow these steps:

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) If you are moving the DB to a different drive/partition, manually cut or copy the \Postgresql\8.x\data directory to it's new location.
3) run the command - start > programs > accessories > command prompt > right-click > run as administrator

net user postgres /delete
4) reboot.
5) Install the same version of PostgreSQL as your current DB using these instructions if you have 8.3 - http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/71/Reinstall+PostgreSQL+Preserving+Old+Database, and if you have 8.4 you want to install this version - http://www.enterprisedb.com/products/pgdownload.dowindows
6) If you have moved/installed your DB to a non-default location, please make sure to change the 'Data Directory' path during the installation.
