I'm trying to install the software...however it gives an error:

error opening file for writing :

C:\PSQLINSTALL\TestFirewall.exe

Do I abort, retry, ignore or do something different altogether?

Which Operating System, Firewall, and Anti-Virus are you using?

Try reinstalling postgresql 8.3.9 using these steps:

1) Use www.revouninstaller.com to uninstall postgresql.

2) run the command - start > programs > accessories > command prompt > right-click > run as administrator

net user postgres /delete

3) reboot

4) Install this version of PostgreSQL - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Postgres_8.3.9-v1.0.7.exe

I'm using windows xp, not sure which fire-wall and AVG is my anti-virus-software...

I don't think postgresql was installed yet...I don't see it in the Revo-list...I believe the install-proces was supposed to install it, but as I said, the install-proces didn't work because of the error-message.

What should I do?

Go to step 4 in your message and then try to install holdemmanager again?

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - http://faq.holdemmanager.com/questions/275/WindowsFirewall%7B47%7DDefenderProblems

1) run the command - start > programs > accessories > command prompt > right-click > run as administrator

type:

That should display a list of windows user accounts. if you see one named 'postgres', do the following step:

type:

net user postgres /delete

3) reboot

This thread just solved my HUD problems. Follow these steps now or it will cause you a headache later on. Thanks.

About the firewall:
In that link it says to add Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.x\bin in the exceptions list but this program does not exist...

I don't know how to perform step one: run the command - start > programs > accessories > command prompt > right-click > run as administrator

Its not the bin- folder which you need to add to the exceptions there must be some executable files in this folder you should add, the full names are:
C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.x\bin\Pg_ctl.exe
C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\8.x\bin\Postgres.exe

This link should answer your 2nd question: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-Vista-run-command-prompt-administrator-t146674.html

You're running XP right? This was my solution to the problem OP. I just ignored the message and setup Hold Em Manager as if nothing happened. Once I had HEM on my comp and installed. I uninstalled postsql just go to start>my computer>control panel > add/remove program and remove it. From reading your above posts, it sounds like you might not even have to do this, if it's not in the list of programs to remove skip this step. Then download the new one http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/Pos...3.9-v1.0.7.exe and it should work without the error message. Now next time you open HEM it will make you setup a new database and it should work properly.

That tells you exactly how to do it, but using the installer I linked, it actually isn't necessary, I believe. You should be able to simply install the new version that I and the other poster linked to, and it will handle those steps I detailed.

Oke, I think both programs are installed now: Do I still need to add those exceptions to the firewall as a general measure?

Also, in the install video it said something about updating to the latest version - do I need to do this (I downloaded the free trial three days ago)?

thx

If HM works fine there is no need to add exceptions to the filewall.

Latest version is 1.10.01: http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmUpdate.exe
