This is just a part answer from personal experience & IT'S ONLY MY OPINION !!

OEM LAPTOPS:-

** Make sure you buy one that's not loaded down with third party crapware 'free' programs - they are such a pain to uninstall well. Some OEM's let you choose what crapware you want - I suggest you choose to have none
** Some OEM's are very intrusive - It was a pain to get rid of Sony off my laptop. Sony were controlling my life for a week until I figured out how to get rid without breaking my system
** Just about every program is available free somewhere for later download when you have time to consider what's best for you. Better to start with nothing & add what you need than try to remove/disable stuff later

WINDOWS OS:-
** Any will work including 7 - I am happily using a very very stripped down version of XP
** Make sure you have the most up-to-date MS .NET framework & SP installed for your OS (not a problem I don't think if you're buying new). See BlackViper below - they have info on .NET stuff

PERFORMANCE:-
** See the performance tips on this forum
** Windows has FAR TOO MANY services enabled as standard. When you get your laptop check out the blackviper website:
http://www.blackviper.com/
You will most likely be running 7 so here is blackvipers suggested configs for Windows 7 (USE THE 'SAFE' COLUMN !):
http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/servicecfg.htm

HDD:-
** I suppose you should go with SSD, but I'm no expert

ERGONOMICS:-
** GET THE BIGGEST SCREEN you can afford/carry
** Make sure it has a first class keyboard - don't skimp... & try-before-you-buy

Hope this helps
