What version of Postgres do I need for Windows 7?

I downloaded the version that I thought I needed from reading this forum, however when I try to restore my database, it basically just crashes into Not responding.

ANy help much appreciated.

Thx

i used 8.3 and it worked fine, but if u have 8.4 you will have to go into services and stop it and possibly start 8.3

8.3 and 8.4 both work fine on Windows 7.
However if you want to restore an old database (using backup/restore in pgAdminIII) you need the same version as you were using before, as 8.3 and 8.4 are not compatible with each other.

If during the restore, you see "not responding" just IGNORE IT. That's normal, and it actually is still restoring the database.

I'm migrating toa new Windows 7 PC myself.

I started to install PostgresSQL 8.4 on it -
Is it better to backup/restore the database, or to re-import all of my hand histories?

Same effect?

Backup/restore is faster, but less reliable.

Didn't I see something about the programmers moving to some other database that wouldn't be so difficult to maintain?

Or was I dreaming?

The database encoding changed from sql ascii to utf8. It is still PostgreSQL.
