So reads error message. However, host file reads at bottom with several hundred addresses; R column: individual addresses blacklisted by Spybot Search & Destroy, L column: repeated Server Name ('127.0.0.1').

I've never used Microsoft Defender (as referenced in self help file). I've never received this error message despite having used Spybot S&D on a weekly basis for several years, certainly many times since installing HEM/PostgreSQL. As such, I have stopped the self-help and opted against installing 1.10 Beta 5 (currently running v1.09).

I have stopped and started the database multiple times when defragmenting my drive. This is the first time I've encountered a problem in nearly a year of service. Presently, as expected, when I click Start > All Programs > PostgreSQL 8.3 > Start Service ; it simply fails to start.

Uninstalling Spybot S&D and reconstructing the host file as instructed in the self-help guide, step 1:

http://forums.holdemmanager.com/showthread.php?t=8182

is my first thought, but a juvenile one at best. If it fails to initiate following that, I am stuck.

Any help would be a godsend.

The file you sent me via PM seems to be missing at least one line.

Here is yours:

# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
# Start of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy
127.0.0.1 www.007guard.com

Here is mine:

127.0.0.1 centiyo.com

Notice this line:

::1 localhost

Try adding that line to yours.

Inserted line of code as suggested

::1 localhost

Unfortunately, no change in program behavior. My original host file is in your email inbox as an attachment from me.

Also, Start > All Programs > PostgreSQL 8.3 > Start Service fails to execute in its DOS box.

Fozzy, I forgot to say, "thanks" for your help. I'm freakin' out here big time and appreciate your assistance.

This was via PM from PatVS:

I've seen this a dozen times.
The hosts file gets bigger and bigger. At some point it's 450+ KB---> and suddenly PostgreSQL server is no longer running / no connection can be made.

Just uninstall Spybot--> remove crap from Hosts file--> reboot---> possibly reinstall SQL---> and it should work again.

By "crap" I can assume you mean everything including and below:
# Start of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy
127.0.0.1 www.007guard.com
127.0.0.1 007guard.com
"
"

as well as inserting your:
::1 localhost
as instructed above?

Again, thank you.

The only thing it should state in your hosts file is:

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

reboot... and I'd completely reinstall SQL.

Patvs and Fozzy,

I wish to sincerely thank you both for your time and initiative in working to solve my problem. It turned out to be much more complex than anticipated.

One of your (potentially) new staffers from Los Angeles, B.C. (his initials - not as opposed to Anno Domini), spent an hour on with me on Skype/TeamViewer 5 gutting my database and reinstalling PostgreSQL 8.4 with HEM 1.10b5.

This guy deserves a medal for his efforts. I'm dodging on his name as I don't know where y'all are re negotiations (I never asked) and don't want to be the one to spill the beans. If there is anywhere, anyway that you can get him on staff: do it! His customer service skills, knowledgebase and customer relations are golden.

Kudos!

And . . . PokerStars, HEM and PostgreSQL work like a tripartite dream!
