I had the Trojan virus in October, and went through the reinstall process you prescribed. While my firewall was down I removed my antivirus protection and installed a different one. (it's free from my ISP)
Since then whenever I restart my computer I have to restart postgresql. Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services, and then connect on the HEM Database Control Panel. That's been no problem, I'm not much of a computer person, and prefer that to screwing around with opening firewall ports, etc.
Now I get the 'failed to establish connection...' problem as described in the sticky above, and when I get it running, HEM imports a couple of hands and I get "postgres has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry..."
Help?

Thanks guys

The secondary logon service is a standard windows service which is available on every windows computer. In the latest versions it is not started automatically. You need to start it via control panel > administrative tools > services > secondary logon > right-click > start AND right-click > properties > startup type: automatic.

Now I get the 'failed to establish connection...' problem as described in the sticky above, and when I get it running, HEM imports a couple of hands and I get "postgres has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry..."

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.

First try to reboot.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171

Please try following all of these FAQs, step by step:

1) http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177
3) http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions - http://forums.holdemmanager.com/showthread.php?t=20755

OK, I've made it to 'Fix Local Host' in example 3. It shows 127.0.0.1 local host. The rest of it just looks too confusing. At one point I ran some test hands, HUD seemed OK for a few hands, thought it was all good. Then postgresql closed again. Later, after more tries, HEM howed no data and 'Hands (x)'. Now, I can't restart postgresql or HEM. I had to access the forum from the website.

If I try:

1) Will there be instructions later on importing hands? I understand importing hands into HEM databases, but I still don't know what postgresql is or does.

2) This will be the 8.4 version? I'm on 8.3 now. Anything I should know? I remember reading past posts somewhere, but stuck with 8.3 to keep it simple.

3) The last time I saw my HEM page, it showed 0 data. It's still stored somewhere, right? My concern when I'm doing this stuff is that I'll lose it all.

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I'm 49 years old, this stuff doesn't come naturally to me, and my brain is mush right now.

Thanks guys

-1. Importings hands later will just be the click of a button: start auto import hands.

PostgreSQL is a database software and HoldemManager runs on top of it. HoldemManager saves all your hands in a SQL database. And whenever you request a hand / session / month / graph / run report, etc. it gets all the information from the SQL database.

-2 If you have 8.3 and it WORKS. Don't change anything. If you're doing a NEW install, feel free to install the latest PostgreSQL 8.4.2.

I've replied to your email and posted here to bring it to the top so you can view the original problem/response. Right now I can't even start postgresql. I've ran HEM for over a year now with two different Anti virus services and no problems other than a few common glitches. Please help!

Thank you
