Trying to install PostgreSQL at the moment on a fresh install of XP SP2. Going through the installation referring to the FAQ, I arrive at a screen that looks different to the one detailed in the instructions:

I wasn't sure what to do here, so I made it resemble the image from the FAQ as closely as possible, with the Client setting to SQL_ASCII to match Encoding (Server).

After going through the rest of the procedure, the install errored out saying it could not start the service, Retry/Cancel? Retrying didn't work, so I cancelled it. I then uninstalled it via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and deleted everything from the Program Files directory, but trying to install again with different settings, I get the message "The user account already exists.!" If I try and install using another Account Name, I get this:

I'm at a loss as to what to do now. I can has help?

Brief post to clarify some other stuff:

- I have administrative access on the XP machine

- Trying to start the PostgreSQL service manually from Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services gives the 'service did not respond in a timely fashion' error

- Windows Firewall and my other software firewall (Comodo) are disabled

Try another Account Name again, can it be possible that you use "gloc" already? Try something like "poker", it doesnt matter what you choose, you still use the name postgres to login

Uhm, 'poker' seems to work. I dunno what the issue must have been with 'gloc'.

Can you clarify how I need to fill out the fields in the first image? I had all the settings as close as I could to the image in the FAQ, but it didn't seem to work. Edit: for reference, this is what I tried last time. Is this right?

Encoding WIN1252 for both server and client and leave locale as it is (your location), we need to update the PostgreSQL tutorial :)

fabio,

Thanks again for your help.

Following your instructions, the installer again reaches the 'Starting services...' point, stalls for about thirty seconds, and then gives me the following popup:

Do you have any antivirus software running?

fabio,

Yes, AVG 8.0. I'm shutting it down before I try to install PostgreSQL, though.

Please uninstall it completely, restart your computer, install postgres, install antivirus again
