One of the instructions in the above link indicates that I need to remove the program PostgreSQL 8.3. When I tried to uninstall the program, I received an error: “Windows Installer Install server not responding.” Do you know if any of the steps prior to the uninstall step could possibly be causing me to get this error? This error is preventing me from removing the software. It also prevents me from removing some other software on my PC.

If not, then I may need to re-install my Windows Vista operating system. Before I do that, I want to back up the Holdem Manager database files so that when I re-install on the new OS, I can then lay the files down and have the database as it was. Is this possible to do? If so, please tell me where the database files are which I need to back up. Also, will those database files contain not only the hands that I have from Full Tilt, but also the HUDs and Popups that I have created?

Also, please tell me where I can find the Full Tilt poker hands that I have not yet imported into the databse. I want to back up those files as well, so that I can import those hands after I re-install Windows Vista.
Please let me know if there are any other files associated with Holdem Manager that you think I should make a copy of.

Thank You

Which Operating System and Service Pack?

Try these steps first:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171

Please try following all of these FAQs, step by step:

1) http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177
3) http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands using these instructions - http://forums.holdemmanager.com/showthread.php?t=20755

Try using www.revouninstaller.com to remove postgresql.

If not, then I may need to re-install my Windows Vista operating system. Before I do that, I want to back up the Holdem Manager database files so that when I re-install on the new OS, I can then lay the files down and have the database as it was. Is this possible to do?

The steps/links above explain how to reinstall using the same \data folder as before. This is never 100% guaranteed to work, the same way I would never insure a backup/restore will work. I always suggest people backup everything manually, assuming they can connect to their DB.

http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20754

If so, please tell me where the database files are which I need to back up

the \postgresql\8.3\data folder

Also, will those database files contain not only the hands that I have from Full Tilt, but also the HUDs and Popups that I have created?

The \rvg software\holdem manager\config\prefs.xml file contains all your hud configs and settings. I recommend you export any custom hud configs manually from time to ime. Then if your prefs.xml file ever becomes corrupted or lost you can import the individual HUD configs to recreate them in a fresh HM installation, etc.

Also, please tell me where I can find the Full Tilt poker hands that I have not yet imported into the databse.

full tilt > options > hand history > open folder

You can email their support and ask for all your old hand histories and tourney summaries.

could not find the postmaster.pid file

tourney summaries.

In the above link, step # 6 is "6. Uninstall PostgreSQL", and I am still having problems with Windows Installer. I might need to re-install Windows Vista.

Even though I could not uninstall and then re-install, I tried to do this:

Please try following all of these FAQs, step by step:

1) http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34

I got to the point where it instructs me to go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, and then start or restart the Postgre SQL Database Server. I was not able to complete this step because the status is not "Started", but rather "Starting", and it is stuck in the "Starting" status. At one point I got this error message: "Windows could not start the PostgreSQL Database Server 8.3 service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Do you have any idea why this could be happening?

Thank You

This step:

2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177

also requires windows installer to run correctly. I am rapidly concluding that I will need to re-install my operating system. If you think there is anything else I should try first to get Holdem Manager running, please let me know.

I am not able to find the the \postgresql\8.3\data folder. Here are all of the folders that I can see:

PostgreSQL\8.3\bin
PostgreSQL\8.3\doc
PostgreSQL\8.3\lib
PostgreSQL\8.3\pgAdmin III
PostgreSQL\8.3\share
PostgreSQL\8.3\StackBuilder

there is no "\data" folder.

Also, as long as I get the prefs.xml file, I should have basically all I need, since Full Tilt will email my hand histories to me... do you agree? And so really I do not need to do a backup and restore, and do not need the data folder anyway, right?

Also, is there a way for me to start Holdem Manager without the databse, so that I can export the popups and huds manually as well as save the prefs.xml file? Or is saving prefs.xml all that I need to do, and the export is not necessary for me at this point?

Windows Vista, service pack 1

....

Are you unable to update to Service Pack 2?

This step:

If you can't update Vista to SP2, you will probably need to reformat.

PostgreSQL\8.3\doc

Those folders are of no use to you. If you dont have a \data folder or .backup file your old DB is lost.

Yes

And so really I do not need to do a backup and restore, and do not need the data folder anyway, right?

Correct

Also, is there a way for me to start Holdem Manager without the databse,

No

The popups are contained in the \holdem manager\config folder. I recommend you copy/backup the entire \holdem manager folder to be sure you have everything. Then when you reinstall HM using my revo reinstall instructions you can copy your entire \config folder into the new installation.

http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20816

You can't export your individual HUDs at this point. 99% of the time all you need is the prefs.xml file, and any custom .POP files. Copy/pasting the entire \config folder is a bit of overkill, but it is easier to just do it that way. If your auto import folders have changed your old \config\holdemmanager.config may not be accurate anymore, so obviously double-check all of your basic HM settings/preferences after you paste the old \config folder into the new installation.

I have re-installed the OS, and re-installed Holem Manager.

For some reason, I cannot see the HUD when I start to import hands. I cannot even see the default HUD, and I have already tried HUD Options > Relauch HUD.

Also, I replaced the entire config folder with a copy of the one that I had previously, but I cannot see any of my HUDs (I do see my Pop-Ups). My prefs.xml file is right there in the folder C:\Program Files\RVG Software\Holdem Manager\Config, but it is as if there is nothing in it. (I noticed that the only thing in the Config folder, before I replaced it with my old Config folder, was a single file named "HoldemManager.config" - I thought that was odd because my Config folder that I copied in has many files in it, plus two subfolders as well.)

How can I get the default HUD to lauch? And how can I get my HUDs out of that prefs.xml file?

The version of Holdem Manager that I have installed is 1.09.03.

Thanks

I have gotten my old HUD configurations back. Now, the only only problem still remaining is to get the HUD to lauch at Full Tilt.

I have already set the executables to run as administrator. Anything else I should try?
