This is usually a firewall or windows update issue.
First try to reboot. If that doesnt help delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it.
If no help, try this:
Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service
Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service
Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171
Please try following all of these FAQs, step by step:
1) http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177
3) http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261
If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands.
thanx,
but I cannot open folder "\postgresql\8.x\data\". windows says folder is corrupted....
I have just reinstalled postgre in new folder. It works properly but I lost all my data....

You should have an \HMArchive folder where all of your auto-imported hands were moved to.
Your \HMArchive is likely not in your \Holdem Manager directory. We normally suggest you use C:\HMArchive, but you may have put it anywhere.
To verify the location: Options > Configure Auto Import Folders > Edit > Archive Folder: ___________________

If you play a site like stars/ftp you can email their support and ask for all your old hand histories and tourney summaries.

i've followed all of the steps and i'm still getting "The following error occured when trying to open the database: Failed to establish a connection to 127.0.0.1.".
i've been using HEM on this computer problem free for nearly a year. in the past couple of weeks there have been some error messages here and there, but i'd just manually reconnect to the postgresql and it would work fine. yesterday i started to get the "The following error occured when trying to open the database: Failed to establish a connection to 127.0.0.1." and there seems to be no hope since
i also have HEM on my laptop, which works fine, if that matters
since then, in an effort to get HEM working again, i just uninstalled/deleted everything with postgresql and tried to just reinstall it, still no good
i've uninstalled all of my adware, anti-virus, and spyware programs. i've also disable user controls, windows defender, and firewall

Please try our postgresql installer: http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/pginstaller.exe

You'll need to restore a backup or reimport all your hands.
Or do you want to restore your old data folder. I'm afraid you deleted it during the uninstall / reinstallation tries.

ya deleted 6 years worth unfortunately. e-mail Stars and FTP support and ask them for files or is there an easier way?

If you have a copy of your old \postgresql\data folder you could try to reinstall that. Otherwise you would need to reimport the original hands and/or any exported hands you might have had from the old DB.
Your \HMArchive is likely not in your \Holdem Manager directory. We normally suggest you use C:\HMArchive, but you may have put it anywhere.
