This just started happening today. I followed all the instructions here but it hasn't helped:

http://forums.holdemmanager.com/showthread.php?t=8261

I just emailed Morny for a Teamview session but thought I'd post here anyway.
I'm running PostSql 8.2 + HEM 1.09.02 on XP

I don't know if it's a concidence but this started happening when I purged some observed hands then vacumned my DB, stopped the vacumming in process then restarted it to completion. I noticed a Delayed Write Errror something like "Delayed Write Failed, and then gave a file path in the postgres data\base\ folder"

My current error mssg when I connect to PostSql is:

"Connection Error: Unable to read data from the transport connection. An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host ... System.Net Sockets. Socket Exception." and it goes on for about 14 more lines.

Morny no longer works for HM. I took over for him in June.

This is usually a firewall or windows update issue. With an older DB, and the delayed write error, it may also be a corrupt DB.

First try to delete the \postgresql\8.x\data\postmaster.pid file, if you see it, and reboot.

If no help, try this:

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Stop Service

Start > Programs > PostgreSQL > 8.x > Start Service

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, do the equivalent or uninstall it temporarily - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171

Please try following all of these FAQs, step by step:

1) http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34
2) reinstall the same version of postgresql, using the same \data folder - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177
3) http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261

If that doesn't help you will probably have to reinstall PostgreSQL completely and reimport your hands.

If you have to install sql again, use these steps: http://forums.holdemmanager.com/showthread.php?t=20755

Sigh ... I did all these steps but still have problems. It's been about 8 hours already today. I can't even get it to start. I get this message: ""The PostgreSql Database Server 8.2 service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts service.” Plus I've deleted the postmaster.pid file about 6 times today already and did 2 uninstall/reinstalls.

Unless you think otherwise, I think I'll go for the option of just reinstalling everything but the last link you gave me talks about Vista/Windows 7 + PostSql 8.4. I also noticed that my Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel lists HEM twice (Once for 7.4MB and another for 24MB) so I don't mind just deleting everything and reinstallign them. I have XP and had 8.2.

How should I go about this? I'm not that computer literate.

1) First, how do I recover my DB, notes and configurations (I use the note function in HEM)? I assume I'll just dump them in a temporary folder and reimport them.

2) What do you mean reinstall PostSql completely? I removed it today through the Add/Removal Program feature but I assume that's not what you mean.

3) Which version of PostSql should I install? 8.2, 8.3, 8.4?

4) What else do I need to know? I assume the reimport will take a long time.

5) If you think the Delayed Write Error is an indication of a corrupt DB, will I have problems reinstallign the DB?

thanks

That is probably going to be the easiest solution at this point.

I also noticed that my Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel lists HEM twice (Once for 7.4MB and another for 24MB) ......

I would suggest uninstalling both of those entries, using revo uninstaller, but first you want to make sure you backup everything.

1) First, how do I recover my DB, notes and configurations (I use the note function in HEM)? I assume I'll just dump them in a temporary folder and reimport them.

The notes are contained in the DB and can only be exported if the DB is connected. I don't know if you will be able to get them out, unless you can manage to reinstall an old Postgresql 8.2 version and use your same DB. You will need to download a copy of Postgresql 8.2 from somewhere to use. http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177

Here are my instructions for backing up - http://www.holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=20754

2) What do you mean reinstall PostSql completely? I removed it today through the Add/Removal Program feature but I assume that's not what you mean.

You also need to delete the postgres user account from the Command Prompt - http://forums.holdemmanager.com/showthread.php?t=20755

3) Which version of PostSql should I install? 8.2, 8.3, 8.4?

Try our new installer for 8.4 - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/pginstaller.exe

4) What else do I need to know? I assume the reimport will take a long time

Depends on the performance of your PC and the number of old hands you have in your \HMArchive. If you play at stars/ftp you can email support for all your old hand histories and tourney summaries.

5) If you think the Delayed Write Error is an indication of a corrupt DB, will I have problems reinstallign the DB?
.......

No, a clean install will eliminate the issue. In fact you may be able to just create a new DB in HM using 8.2, but after all this time you have already spent, it may just be a sign it is time to install the new version. It should also run smoother and import faster.

I can't believe this. I turned on the computer this morning and it works! The only things I did differently were:

1) I manually deleted the specific file that the Delayed Write error was referring to:
C:Program Files\PostSQL\8.2\data\base\26119\26148

2) When I originally set up PostSql, I used a different password than the default: 'postsqlregress' Today, when I reconnected again, I used my old password and it worked though I'm absolutely positive I did use that password yesterday too. I worked 8 hours on it yesterday.

What do you think is going on? Should I still go ahead with the reinstall? I'm not sure if this will happen again. I think all these problems started after I purged hands. btw, the system would only let me purge 1 days hands at a time before I would get the standard timeout message.

also, when I did the re-connect today, it gave me the option to connect to my old PT3 database. How do I delete that to save space?

I just ran a defragmentation and I noticed that some post PostSql folders can't be defragged too. They're files in the the same path as the Delayed Write Error: C:Program Files\PostSQL\8.2\data\base\26119\

1) thats a database file, i guess sth. in your database is corrupt now.

2) I guess the postgresql service crashed yesterday because of 1. And then you cant connect until the reboot.

Make Backups of your database regularly. It can be the beginning of a hardware problem.

For deletion of the PT3 database: http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=21

For the defrag: you need to stop the postgresql service before running a defragmentation.
