Hello all,

I am running a slightly older computer (P4 2.8 ghz) and I bought a new hard drive because of HEM performance issues when multi tasking.

It's a 500 GB WD Caviar Black. I was just wondering,

1) Is there a noticeable performance boost from just running HEM + database + postgre and other applications from the new hard drive and keeping OS/docs on the old one, or should I just move everything on my HD over to this new one?

I don't really need the space. Have about 100gb filled out on this current desktop so I would prefer just adding the Caviar Black as a secondary HD if it leads to better performance.

It should be more efficient if windows goes on the new drive. Then you can try installing postgresql DB to the new drive, or the old drive, to see which gives the best performance. You certainly want your OS on the fastest drive.

Thanks fozzy. Does running the OS on the faster hard drive affect performance that much? I was under the impression that the program locations/database locations were more important.

I ask because I lost my old XP/Word cd key and installing a new OS will erase those, unfortunately, and require me to download new copies or buy them.

I am really a hardware noob and recommend you read this thread, and ask our newest support member PatVS any questions you may have after reading the thread. There are probably other similar threads if you search our forums for 'performance' or related keywords.

If your old harddisk is a 3+ year old model, and the WD Caviar Black is a new model it will make a big difference. The new WD Caviar Black absolutely rocks and is almost as fast as the VelociRaptors. (it can be twice as fast as 3+ yr old 7200 RPM harddisks) Having said that... I love to show this graph of 4K read performance.

Your overall Windows/computer performance (1) and HEM performance (2) are mostly influenced by: having ENOUGH RAM memory and the speed of the harddisk. (of course CPU speed matters but you already have a P4 2.8 Ghz which is fast enough for HEM and XP)
