I want to get HEM today or tomorrow, but I want to make sure I know how to set it up in a quick manner. I downloaded the trial version of HEM about 1 year ago, and when I tried to install it, HEM wanted to acquire and use the PostgreSQL database that I already had installed (which was being used for PT3). How do I install HEM without messing around with PT3's database. IOW how do I set up new database just for HEM when I set up HEM? Is this the easiest way to set up HEM?

Are you going to be using PT3 as well? Are you keeping the PT3 DB active?

If so, you will want to install HEM and use the current PostgreSQL server you have to connect HEM and make a new DB.

PT3's default name/password is - postgres/dbpass
HM's default name/password is - postgres/postgrespass

svcpass is another possibility

If you still can't get connected thru HM you can try to remove the password requirement entirely.

Either way you should export your PT3 hands to import to HEM:

I was thinking that I would prob just replace PT3 with HEM and not use PT3 anymore, so I would prob uninstall PT3. How does this change things for setting up HEM?

Nothing changes really. You can use the same postgresql installation, install HEM and create a new DB, then import all your old hands and processed/exported pt3 hands. Once HEM is all setup you can use PGAdmin3 to delete the PT3 DB (http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=21) and then uninstall PT3 if you want.

Is there a difference in speed of set up if I export hands from my database and import those exported hands into HEM vs. importing hands from my "processed" folder (where the HH goes after being processed by PT3) directly into HEM?

I suggest you import both if you have time, typically, to make sure you dont miss any. HEM will go thru duplicate hands quickly. Typically the exported batch has more hands than your processed/archive folder, so that is the best way to go. I dont think there is a major difference between import speeds of original and exported hands. You can also email your poker site support and ask them to email you all your original hands (assuming ftp/stars).

I've been reading up on how to set up HEM once I download it and I have a question. When undergoing step 8 of the set up (http://www.holdemmanager.net/setup/holdemManager.html), won't I screw up PT3 if I ascribe my PostgreSQL database to HEM? IOW if I give my PostgreSQL database to HEM, won't I not be able to export my hands to a folder so that I can import them to HEM? Also, how long does it take to export 450k hands from PT3? If it takes too long, then I think it might be smarter to import from my processed folders instead of exporting and then reimporting into HEM.

Postgresql servers can have multiple DBs for multiple applications. You will have a PT3 Db and a HEM DB.

It shouldnt take very long. 5 or 10 minutes perhaps, but I doubt it would go that long.

Is there anything special I need to do in order to have separate DBs? Or is it as simple as clicking "next" in the set up process?

(Sorry to be a pain. I bet its easier then I'm making it out to be.)

No. You just need to get HEM to connect to your previously installed postgresql server. Then you can create a new HEM DB and your PT3 DB will be completely fine.
