Hey guys I really really need help on this problem ASAP any help would be really appreciated.. I must say I have tried everything on my own to solve this problem without begging for help in the HEM forums...

My database was working 100% fine for the time I have had it on this computer, I decided to do a purge/vaccum/reindex as well as disable log files based on fozzy and other mod's suggestions.. everything was working fine even after that...then I restart and then I get the dreaded message when opening up HEM

The following error occured when trying to open the database: "Failed to establish a connection to '127.0.0.1'"

I immediately researched what I need to do to fix this problem and followed all the instructions from this post http://holdemmanager.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8261

I followed ALL of those steps up to step 6 in which it is STILL giving me the same error message when I open up HEM

Under control panel-> admin -> services, it shows PostgresSQL database server 8.3 as "starting" then when I try to start it it gives me this message:

"Windows could not start the postgresSQL database service 8.3 service on local computer

error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

PLEASE if anyone can offer help or support to get me up and running I would greatly appreciate it, as I need this database to get back to work :(

Thanks all

Did you try deleting the postmaster.pid file as detailed in this faq?

http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=34

Under Vista and Windows 7 make sure UAC is disabled http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmmain.aspx?faqid=73 and/or holdemmanager.exe and hmhud.exe are started as administrator. Run the windows explorer and navigate to your Holdemmanager installation directory. Right click the holdemmanager.exe and the hmhud.exe executable and select "Run as admin" from the popup menu.

Add exceptions to the windows firewall, even if it is off. If you have a 3rd party firewall, uninstall it completely before installing HM/SQL - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=171

Did you try a reinstall of the old DB, without replacing those 5 original \data files?

I usually try that, before I try the method you linked to.

If none of that works, it is usually easier to just install sql 8.4 clean, to a new DB, and import all of your archived hand histories and/or email the poker sites for all your hand histories.

I cant seem to see the postmaster.pid? These are all the files in my data folder... the only one close is a postmaster.opts which exists only in the old backup folder

all firewalls/windows defender/antivirus etc all off

How do i do this?

Please update to the latest beta - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/HmBetaUpdate.exe

For reinstalling SQL to the same DB, follow these steps:

1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) Manually delete the \Postgresql\8.x\data directory and rename your -original version to \data
3) run the command - start > run > cmd >

net user postgres /delete
4) reboot.
5) Install the same version of PostgreSQL as your current DB using these instructions - http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=177

If you followed the 'still cant connect to postgre thread, and deleted/overwrote your original config files, this may be doing the same thing. I usually save a copy of the original config files, before trying the more elaborate method of reinstalling and using those config files.

When you installed 8.3 to a new DB cluster was HEM able to connect to the DB Control Panel? It may be some type of problem with your DB files that we may not be able to overcome.

All I can really try, is the things I have suggested here. I dont have any more tricks in my bag that I can think of. I would be glad to try, but I am booked solid tonight, and gone tomorrow morning/afternoon, so it would have to be sometime late tomorrow afternoon/evening.

Please email me at fozzy@holdemmanager.net with a link to this thread, so we can schedule a Teamviewer session. Download the Teamviewer Quick Support Module - http://www.holdemmanager.com/downloads/TeamViewerQS.exe. Please let me know what time zone you are in and what time/days are convenient for you.

Great news for you. Make sure you backup all your archived hands and export your current DB to text files, and backup those as well. ;)
